Hello,
I am putting a new hydraulic cylinder on my JD BWA disc harrow. The old one has died. I went to Agri-Supply here in NC and picked up a new one. I put it on and hooked up the lines. One of the lines felt like it stripped when I tightend it up. I hooked to tractor and raised and lowered it a couple times and then BOOM..Fluid everywhere. So I take it back and get another. The original had the lines coming straight off the cylinder. The new cylinders come off to the side. I am using 90 degree fittings so they will be inline with the cylinder.Guess what, I have had the same thing happen with the second cylinder. What am I doing wrong. The lines are 1/2 inch. The fittings feel a little loose and have some play. I tried all other sizes and the ones that I have are the only ones that fit. I will tell you that it is a Grizzly clyinder(Import) if that matters. Any help would be great.
Thanks
Devin

I am not clear on what part of the cylinder or hose fittings failed. /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif Can you add some more info or pictures?

Could be the threads are different. There are qyite a few different threads that really look the same but are not.

Sounds like you have the wrong fittings. There are NPT tapered pipe thread fittings, and there are straight threaded, O-RING fittings, and a few more "obscure" types. MOST cylinders I've seen use tapered pipe thread fittings. In that case, your fittings should start to snug up after 5 or 6 turns at the most. IF... the cylinder employs O-RING type fittings, and you thread a tapered pipe thread fitting into it, you'd be lucky to get one complete thread to make contact.

The Grizzly cylinders that Agri-Supply sells have 3/8" NPT female fittings. Make sure the 90 degree fitting has a 3/8" NPT male end for connection to the cylinder. You should be using some teflon pipe sealant (not teflon tape) on the male threads of your 90 degree fitting. These threads are tapered and seal when the fitting is tightened. Use a wrench and get them fairly tight as hand tightening them will not hold.

A 1/2" hose doesn't necessarily have 1/2" fittings on the ends either, but if it does then you probably need an adapter.

Since you say you are using 90 degree fittings what is the other (non cylinder) end? NPT threads of JIC? In eather case the connection must be tight (use a wrench) and there is no need to us pipe sealant on the JIC end since it seats and seals on the nipple.
