Hydraulic Oil Disposal

When I was a kid we knew an old farmer that had an old MF diesel tractor. He used waste oil of all types as diesel fuel. Long before we had the eviornmental watch dogs we now have. His reason was not cost, just getting rid of it. Iused to help him strain it through a nylon stocking. Should work good though as long as you filter it good first.

Many years ago I had the bright idea to use waste oil as bar oil in a chainsaw. Guess I didn't filter it well enough, because it clogged things up good!
Real PITA to clean everything out. But I saved $7 on a gallon of bar oil! :duh:

After filtering it, I mix it 50/50 with diesel and pour it in the tanks...

There is a plethora of places around here with waste oil furnaces, so giving them used oil and hydraulic fluid is like giving me 10 gallons of diesel.

I made the mistake of mixing waste oil with automatic transmission fluid and using it for bar oil. Worked fine until I stored the saw in my shed for a while. It was an old bow saw and the bow and chain were solid rust when I got it back out. I didn't save any money.

I forget to mention that old MF was "old". It would burn anything, even lube oil. He also burned lube oil mix with kerosene. I would not try such a thing in a newer diesel designed for the low sulfur diesel we have today.

Got any cedar fence posts?
If yes, then pour some over the tops for weather proofing.

Have any nuisance brush? Add some with herbicide for a good kill rate.

So there are a few application that come in handy.

Even filtered, it makes a nasty mess. I used it for one tank, and decided that I would rather spend a little and run clean oil through my 500$ saw.

ONLY 11 gallons,,,?? after years of procrastination, I took my oils to the recycle center,

Here is a recent pic of my visit to the local recycle center,,,

The 400 gallon tank at the recycle center was 3/4 full when I arrived,,

I had a few gallons left over at the end after I topped off the tank,,
so I just set the filled containers on the ground and left.

I actually made this trip right after I changed the hydraulic oil in my 584 IH.

Just dropped off 6 gallons of oil at wal mart auto, no problem.They have you sign a log book.

Our county has a mandated recycling program..... well mandated that you pay into it, not that you use it. However they have a drop off location for household waste like paint, oil and the like. They would take it. Only have to prove you are a resident of the county.
