Never seen a shaft coupling like that. Looks like 1/2 of something. Does the suction line have wire reinforcing to prevent collapsing? Looks like plain old heater hose but may be something else. So the engine sounds the same now as it did before when it was working? Sounds the same when attempting to operate any function? As was mentioned, plumbing a pressure gauge between the pump and valve would be useful. Are you absolutely sure the pump is turning when you are putting a load on it? Coupling slipping? If you can't watch it, make a match mark on it and try it. Shut it down and se if the marks still align.

Is your middle picture the drive to the pump?
If so with the engine running at an idle is the shaft rotating and the coupling rotating and the rest of the shaft to the left.
Two ways to start, that unit doesn't hold much hydraulic fluid, disconnect the outline of the pump and direct it into a bucket
start the engine and see if you get good flow under some pressure, if no flow or minimum flow check the suction line for an inlet screen.
Also if you are getting flow with the engine just off of idle operating a valve to full should stall the engine if it's pumping correctly.

The hydraulic pump coupling is exactly what I was asking about; it is a Lovejoy coupling and in my experience subject to failure. I would pull the pump and check the coupling before I did anything else.

I do not think any kind of blockage would cause this issue since it is not likely to happen after shutting down the machine. However, the sudden starting load on a coupler could be the cause of the failure.

I've used LoveJoys and others with the same design and it "kind of" looks like 1/2 of one. My bet is on the coupling too.

That coupling ain't right.

I thought the same thing. I wonder if the shafts are held in the coupler by the set screws??

It looks like two of the 3 pieces of that coupler are missing, unless I don't understand what I'm looking at. There's supposed to be a rubber shock absorber and another steel jaw that mates with the jaw in the picture. The question is where did those pieces go and how could this pump ever have produced pressure? The picture gets fuzzy to the left, maybe those pieces are out of view, or there's a way for the pieces to fall off the end of the shaft.

I think it was installed using half of the coupler to connect the two shafts by either mating up the keyways (unlikely, but possible) or using the setscrews to tighten down on each shaft. This is usually impossible since the two shafts are almost always different diameters.

After mulling it over I'm not so sure it is the coupler since I do not see bits of metal in the pics, but it is so simple to check I'd start there. I would also put in the correct coupler with the rubber insert to absorb the start up load.

Stuck relief valve?
