Posthole Digger Hydraulic or pto post hole auger?

Could a hydraulic wheel motor be mounted directly inline with the auger shaft without a gearbox being used?

Something like this, for example?

Hydraulic is the way to go. My tractor turns the bit a lot slower than a skid steer but never failed to get the job done.

I don't think so, look at the torque required on this DINGO brandToro | Universal Swivel Auger (22806) it's almost 4 times as much. That's not even their High TQ model. You maybe able to use a motor like this: Dynamic Low Speed, High Torque Hydraulic Motor 15.8 GPM, 1250 PSI | Motors Mounting Brackets| Northern Tool + Equipment.

Thanks, that was just a random selection of a wheel motor. Just wondering if a gearbox could be eliminated.

The linked Dingo can handle a 24 inch auger. I could get by with a 9 inch.

Basically I found a high torque, low rpm motor that was the right size for my B2400 and connected directly to the auger shaft. Works very well for home use with a 12 inch auger.

I got a Belltec auger this summer and it works fine on my Kioti DK45SC. There are a fair number of manufacturers offering hydraulic auger units in the 6-15gpm size. My tractor's flow is just under 10gpm; more flow would give me better performance, but this one does the job. My only complaint is that I can't quite see where the auger tip meets the ground from the cab, so I'm thinking of getting one of those magnetic backup cameras to help with positioning. I think one of these cameras would also help me with positioning when I'm using my bucket teeth or grapple rake teeth to pop small trees out of the ground.

Bill I think you have a good point. Maybe just hiring someone for the day is most economical.

If you do decide to hire someone to auger the holes I can tell you I charge $20 per hole. I'm in Ontario Canada so obviously prices may be different where you are but that'll give you some idea on what it will cost so you can decide which way to go. Cheers!

Thanks Bill, not sure what it'd cost me around here but thats a pretty fair chunk. Considering how many holes, I could afford a pretty deluxe hydro auger and a bigger pump to boot. Maybe a rental unit would be a compromise? I'll look into it.
