Hydraulic Post Drivers

Can anyone provide some information on tractor mounted hydraulic post drivers? What brand is best? How well do they work? What is the price range? What type of mount is the best, 3-point hitch, mounted on front of tractor to frame or FEL mounted?

I can't be much of a help here other than the fact that my neighbor behind me has one (the brand eludes me), but he swears by it over a post hole digger.

He inserts a cedar post into this contraption and it pounds it into the ground. It's fairly loud as it hammers these posts, but when he is done, he is done. No need to back fill the posts, or set them in concrete, etc.

He puts in many many cedar posts for his different fenced areas for his horses which he boards.

I researched the various brands, including the Danuser model, but I chose the Worksaver post driver for its cost and the recommendations of several farmers in the area.

I have put up about 400 posts since April, and I love the machine.

It is a 3 pt. hitch model, with manual adjustments for level. You can look to pay about $1900 - $2200 for one such as mine.

Munro makes a nice one but it's not cheap. It's a auger & post driver combined.

Do you just drop your return hose into the hydraulics fill? I tryed to find an adapter but haven't been able to find one. Also did you ever get your three point and pounder to work at the same time? If not I bought the hpd-20 shc and there is a guy at the factory named Tom that is very knowledgeable on this.

We have used one with a John deere. It has put in thousands of posts. After a lot of posts the hydraulics would get hot and shut down. It bothered my father-in-law so much he traded the JD for a Ford 3930.

Now a contractor does the fence maintenance.

No, I had to install a power beyond unit which has a fitting for the return.

As far as the 3 pt. and the pounder working at the same time - well, I spoke with the mechanic at JD and he said that it was unavoidable and he doubted that any re-plumbing would allow them both to work.

If Tom might know a way around this, I'd love any info he might have.

I think I might have figured out why mine works and yours doesn't. I was pounding posts this weekend and trying to figure it out. On my old post pounder I had a connection to my hydraulics and and a valve to turn off from the pounder to the hydraulics. When I got the new one I used the same one and got the fittings from deere for the new pounder. Do you have the valve that you can either turn to operate the pounder or the 3 point? If not all you need to do is get a valve that will turn off the hydraulics to the pounder. Mine is just like a t-valve and then it has the pounder hydraulic hose hooked to it. I think that will solve your problem. I hooked mine up without it and my 3 point didn't work either. Hooked it back up and it worked fine.

The one to avoid is a MULTEC made in northern ireland
They use cheap componants that are mismatched.
The spool valves are not capable of handling the oilflow to allow the weight to fall fast enough to drive in a 5 inch post in less than 15 thumbs in dry earth.
The numpties that make this machine need to understand that a heavy weight is no good without speed

They also use second hand steel and I dont think they have grasped the concept of Bearings or grease nipples.
worst machine I have ever owned and the company refuse to give any aftersales support so fall into the worst company I have ever dealt with.

MULTEC PRODUCTS ARE BEST AVOIDED IN MY OPINION.
