So, I am designing a couple of attachments and I have an idea, but with any good idea, it may be a bad idea.

First, my tractor is all hydraulic. I want to power a couple of PTO style implements. So there are some expensive adapters out there I have considered, but at $4K at 500lbs, it is not going to work for me.

So, in an effort to save money, I am mulling over one hydraulic pto motor and swapping it between implements (Post hole digger and stump grinder for the moment).

So, to my structural issue.... Basically, instead of mounting the motor to a plate, and welding that plate somehow in line with the implement, and putting a collar between the two (motor and implement) I was thinking about "hanging" the motor with a chain. The collar would keep it all lined up, the chain would keep it from spinning.

Downsides I can think of, but may not be an issue (Like I said I saw this rig somewhere else) is that it there will be too much stress on the bearings of the motor or the implement, that there is no "Give" using a solid coupler between the two (it is how other hydraulic PTO adapters work). And maybe just too much stress for a chain when the implement comes to a sudden stop.

So, thoughts?

I think that a chain may not hold up when the implement stops suddenly.
I don't know this doesn't sound right. Hydraulic motors need to be REALLY secure.
If you ask me a chain might not cut it.
I'd do some real serious thinking on this one, Carl.

Ya, same thoughts here.

It's do'able, but your going to need something more than a 'chain' mount.

I actually saw a hydraulic PTO somewhere. Mite have been in a Surplus Supply catalog. It was just a 540rpm hydraulic motor that was splined to accept a PTO shaft. Guess it was for building home made tractors or such. I thought it would be a great way to mount a live PTO anywhere I needed one.

Yeah, Pooh, that is what I am looking at is that motor at Surplus. Just need to figure out if using chains as opposed to a plate is going to be an issue.

My other idea is to use a plate, with some sort of quick attaching method that is universal, so I an move the motor from one implement to the other.

I have been playing with some of the same ideas... and the Surplus motor looks good for low end applications. I worry that it may not have the oomph for some places however...

I am plate mounting it to change from unit to unit until I can slowly purchase one for each implement. Where it is applicable I am using a short shaft from the same place to allow some flexibility. The whole unit on the digger after mounting interfered with the carrier arm.

Sunkist, what is your rig? For me I am near Skid Steer Hydraulic power (3100PSI at 18GPM). It isn't much more to create the plate, it is trying to get everything to line up that is really beyond my skill set.

Carl,

I already have the hydraulic motor and spline shaft to add to a bush hog. It is sized for my Case skidsteer at 18 GPM. What I plan to do is this. A hyd motor mounting plate , similar to the one below, but made out of steel bolted to the equipment, and stays in place. The shaft from the gearbox has to be modified to couple with the coupler, which is 1 in shaft to 6 spline. I will build a base so that the motor coupler will be level with the gearbox shaft. You can do this to each of your attachments, and just move the motor around as necessary. You will need relief valves across the motor, or a motor spool valve controlling the motor, so the motor can wind down.
