You would probably need to find one with a remote oil reservoir and then it might be too small to cool constantly moving oil. Flow rate is going to be small too so the hoe better be really small or you will need plenty of time. A loader would be different because there are only 3-4 cylinders to fill, but I would go nuts trying to run a hoe and be able to only run one cylinder at a time. Pumps are usually cheaper than the other stuff and you will spend more on hoses than the right pump. I used a pump off of a Sonoma to run my lift on the WheelHorse and it takes about three seconds to fill the one inch cylinder. Fine for a lift but this would not be acceptable for a backhoe.

Go buy a pump that'll work. I have purchased perfectly good pumps off ebay for $30. Look for something in the 7-10 gallon range. A hoe takes a lot more gallons per minute than say a loader because the cylinders are moving all the time. If you can only move the boom, dipper, slew or bucket one cylinder at a time....you'll die of boredom quick.
Your valves are gonna run you four times more than a pump anyway.
