Toplink Hydraulic side link is too sensitive

Danny

When I talked to V&M about adding a hydraulic multiplier to my rear remote they asked me about adding flow restrictors. After talking to them about it they told me if I knew my flow of my hydraulics (at a particular engine spped) and how fast I wanted to move the cylinder (how long to stoke the cylinder) they could match a flow restictor to what I needed. I haven't done my top & tilt yet but when I do I want them to move pretty slow at near full engine speed.

I checked with Royal Brass in Illinois and they said they have them for $3 each. But, the guy I talked to (Derek) said they only carry one size orifice and he doesn't know the actual size. He said all he knows is that it comes in a small, medium, and large and they only carry the large. They also only come in pipe thread, either 1/2" or 3/8", which means I'd have to get my hoses refitted in order to put the restrictor on the cylinder side. My hoses have 1/2" pipe thread going into the ISO male tip on the tractor side and "nominal 6" (9/16"-16) boss O-ring fittings going into the cylinder.

So, I could get 2 of the 1/2" pipe thread restrictors of unknown orifice size (but probably OK because others have used them and they were satisfied) for $3 each plus shipping, or a total of about $12, and put one in each hose at the tractor side. If it's too slow, I can drill them out until I get the speed I want. If it's still too fast, I've wasted the $12.

Or, I can get 1 of the "nominal 6-6" boss O-ring restrictors with a 30 thousandths orifice here at Columbus Hose and Fittings and put it on the cylinder side of one of the hoses for $15. I doubt 30 thousandths will be too slow, so I can drill it out until I get the speed I want.

This whole Top and Tilt thing has really been a learning experience, and an expensive one at that! The jury is still out on whether it's all worth it.

I ordered 2 of the 1/2" pipe thread restrictors from Royal Brass in Illinois and they came in last week. I looked at the size of the hole it's pretty small, so I thought sure I'd be drilling it out. I called the headquarters in Knoxville, TN and they said it is a 1/32" hole. I installed them yesterday and they are just right! I can easily move the side link just a little. So, I solved the problem for a total of $11.

JimMc - Thanks for clueing me in on this one!

Thanks to everyone else also for ideas and information.

PS: The part number is 8MP-8FPXR and it's called a "Restricted pipe SWVL". It doesn't swivel though, once it's tighteded down it's rigid.

That's great. That information should help several people.

It just amazes me how much fluid can go through that small hole when it's under pressure. Just imagine how small a hole it takes to make that annoying drip or even better the seepage on some fittings!

I came up with a method to help that. I bought a package of balloons (pick any color, I use black) and cut the last 1/2" or so off the end, so it has a hole at both ends. Then, before I put hook the hydraulic line to the tractor, I put the balloon over it and fold it back out of the way. Then I hook up the line and stretch the balloon back over the fitting. It does a great job of keeping dirt and moisture out of the fitting, and catches any seepage. I'll try to post a picture to make it clear in case this description is not making sense.
