Since there is no standard hardware connection between the front wheels and the steering shaft, only a couple of hydraulic cylinders, if one is unable to start the engine and needed to pull it somewhere, how would you steer it?

I have a big skid made out of an opened up fuel oil tank.... I would just jostle the front of the offending tractor onto the steel sheet, chain it to same, then pull the whole shebang where I wanted to go.... But that just me.... :) [ I used to use the big skid for moving big rocks before I had big 'nuff tractors to move them.... ] I think your wife is leaving you too much time for your mind to wander and ponder stuff......

Did you try turning the steering wheel with the motor off?

My TORO steers with the motor not running.

That's about the only way I could figure to do it.

I do have plenty of time to think since my wife died unexpectedly about 6 months ago. Too much time.

The wheel just turns. There is only a hydraulic connection which doesn't connect without the engine running.

It's not power steering, it's hydraulic steering.

I am sorry about your wife. As for steering the tractor split brakes should work

I doubt they're going to work while being towed. I think a short chain and hoping it tracks decent is the easiest option here. Are you sure it won't steer with the engine off. I have several pieces that have only a hydraulic cylinder to move the wheels and they still steer. I blew a power steering hose in the L3240 and i completely lost steering so I know there's no direct linkage.

With no fluid moving and no fluid pressure, it can't push the cylinders in or out to steer. How is it your 'pieces' work without a direct linkage or hydraulic pressure?

I don't know but they do. It's significantly reduced steering but it's enough to keep it pointed in the right direction and make mild direction changes.

You may have to loosen the fittings on steering cylinder so front tires can turn a little bit but it will work. I had a stump break the hydraulic filter off a 2615 gear tractor one time lost fluid so no steering. Had about 150 ft to go to get to trailer an being geared tractor drove right up on trailer steering with brakes only so if towing it an letting pressure of steering cylinder it should work

I don't know what the system is called, but the steering valve turned by the steering wheel acts as a pump to move the steering cylinder, if the engine isn't running. It is slow, but it will move lock to lock.

Sorry to hear that, but we have to carry on. My wife died in 2014. Now there is no one to curb my tractor buying........ and the frying pan wounds are finally starting to heal.

It's called a hydraulic steering valve HSV or sometimes is called an orbital valve that is used in almost any kind of hydrostatic steering system. It's just a valve that meters and directs pressure from the hydraulic pump to the steering cylinder in relation to where the steering wheel is pointing. It can generate no pressure on it's own.

Although this link is on a rock crawling board, it is descriptive of the valve and the role it plays in a hydraulic steering system. All hydraulic steering systems work pretty much the same whether they are in a small tractor to those huge dump trucks used in open pit mines. Pirate4x4.Com - Extreme Four Wheel Drive

You will have a limited amount of steering till the circuit is pumped dry by the steering valve(geroter type pump/valve} The wheel will be hard to turn. when the circuit is empty and the wheel turns easy just crank the engine to refill the system.:confused3:
