John Deere 5400
Hello All,

I have a 1994 John Deere 5400 with the 540 loader. Originally the loader would run off the remotes. I am curious if anyone has advice for adding a block for quick disconnect of the loader but also to hardwire the loader and leave the remotes free for implements. I also often use a grapple bucket and would like a dedicated attachment for loader attachments as well. Does anyone have experience or advice for upgrading the OEM setup with aftermarket valves and joysticks? Any good quality recommendations? I am looking at WR Long.

Always lots of ideas on that sort of thing, and many will be along shortly. Personally, I'm not a fan of solenoid valves of any type (for various reasons) and rarely go that route. Oddly enough, I'm currently looking at a 5400 with a loader supplied from two remotes. The subject came up about changing that to a dedicated joystick loader valve to free up the remotes. I've looked it over and have come up with a few ideas in that direction but haven't actually started on it yet.

Just curious, is this setup what you need?

I don't know how your tractor is set up; I have an older (1985) Italian tractor with a modest hydraulic system that I upgraded a lot.

To run the front loader and more, I added a 3-circuit valve block by diverting the flow pipe between the pump and the factory auxiliary block behind the seat.

This works really well.

The drain-to-tank port just runs from the new valve block to the pressure inlet of the old one, and from there it goes to the 3-point lift.

I also replaced the pump with a larger flow one, and added a priority flow valve to reduce back pressure through the restrictive factory valves (which weren't even adequate for the stock pump).

All this didn't cost a lot; a few hundred bucks for the parts. I made some adaptors and fittings myself.

I have an old Farmall 300. It has 3 levers for hydraulics. 1 Works the drawbar, 1 works the loader, and the last one works the loader bucket. I added remotes to the rear of the tractor by putting tees and valves in the lines going to the loader bucket. When I want my remotes I just shut the valve going to the bucket. the bucket will stay level while using the remotes. A simple job but it works very well. hope this gives you some ideas.
