You might consider these, they also make battery powered units. 2k or less in cost.

Yep. There's someone here on the PT board that might jump in and tell you about those. Pretty handy from what I can tell. (y)

I have used the units from portablewinch.com and they work well for pulling out logs but it will be a fair amount of work. Have you asked for a quote from anyone who has the proper equipment. Sometimes, it makes sense for large jobs to let someone else do it or to rent the proper equipment. It is also possible you have enough value in the trees to pay for the work.

I have used electric, PTO and hydraulic winches on many varied vehicles. They all have one thing in common. The actual weight of the vehicle, more or less, decides their ability to pull objects.

Then you get to the point where the vehicle is anchored. I.E. - chained to a tree or some form of ground anchor. More than once I've seen a winching operation pull a vehicle apart. The object being winched is just too large - the winching vehicle is anchored - something has to give. If you are lucky - the winch will stop. Not so lucky - the winching vehicle can be pulled into bits and pieces.

Be very careful - learn all you can about winching. It can be a very dangerous and costly operation.

At the asking price of $22k without any attachments, I think I could find a wheeled skid steer which would be easier to re-sell later around here.

Most likely.

But I'm gonna say a wheeled skid steer won't go places these things will.

Seems like a skid steer would have a higher lift capacity, more weight, and generally be more robust for moving trees with a grapple and be capable of running a front mount cutter.

What do you see as the advantages of a power trac?

Skid steers do fine with some over the tire tracks. Ones made out of chain with cross bars welded in. See them in the woods regularly.

We have a log skidder. We also use a couple big tractors. Used a rear grapple on a tractor for years. Finally bought a new hydraulic winch for a tow truck, put it on top of the grapple. The grapple is just in the way now. Then, we bought a Farmi. I think a Farmi and some chain chokers will do what you want. Just any forestry winch, no specific brand. I would use come alongs to directionally fall the trees. Two works best. I had two pulp wood trucks in 1992, so I been at it a while.

Maasdam makes some endless rope type pullers. I saw a couple in a pawn shop, wished I had bought them. But, I had regular come alongs with 65' cables.
