Well, I bought the Wix filters, and they're due on Wednesday. I really do have to push back on the Deere markup. I really really hate it. I'm going to go get the hydraulic fluid tomorrow as well. Can anyone give me an idea what 2 x 5 gallons (10 gallons total) of low-viscosity Hy Gard should cost?

I'm hoping this was a matter of an old suction side filter. How exactly do I find a low side leak? So I just rely on a visual check? Do I listen for hissing? that would be difficult, as the exhaust is right beside the pump and that tractor isn't quiet. Would a thermal camera help? I'm wondering if a leak might show a little cool spot... We have one of these in our lab that I could use for a day if it would help.

Can anyone speak to the metal in the strainer? That looks bad to me, but because of what some others said, I don't know what to make of it.

Pretty normal to have some metal.

Well, the new filters and fluid seem to have done the job. I replaced the filters, cleaned the strainer, and added about 9 gallons (9.7 gallons system). The jerkiness has left the loader entirely, and it seems to be working its way out of the drive too. I assume it's just trapped air at this point, that has to be worked out.

Does it seem reasonable that there would be about 0.7 gallons still trapped in the system. I wouldn't be surprised, but what do you all think? In the event that it's overfilled, are there any problems? I know overfilling on motor oil is bad, but I can't imagine how there could be too much hydraulic fluid... Perhaps there's an upper limit to the fluid level, so there's always room for it to expand when hot?

After having drained all the hydraulic fluid, and refilled the system, how does the system purge all its trapped air?

Lastly, does anyone know what the micron rating is, of Wix hydraulic filters?

Thanks for help and the peace of mind, guys. You have no idea how little sleep I got in the last week!

Two years ago it cost me $85 per 5 gallon container at the JD dealership.

I just got my invoice from my JD dealership. A$112.80 per 5 gallon container. The filter was A$115.29.

I knew it was coming and am happy to pay for the vital parts of a HST tractor.

They must have packaged this oil when it was going for $140 a barrel.

Well I must publicly retrieve my JD dealer from under the bus. Not only did their service guy correctly predict that it was a case of plugged filters and nothing more, but the low vis Hy Gard cost me $140 for ten gallons.

Johanna is running well, and acting like her old self.

THANK YOU all so much for the help.

Oh. And I should maybe look at my hours meter a little more often. I was slightly off (read: way off) on the 400 hour statement. Too proud to say how far off though... :)
