My son, an 8th grader is interested in hydraulics and is planning to prepare his science project on the effect that different oils and other liquids have on the lifting power of a hydraulic jack. That is his plan. Do any of you with extensive experience with hydraulics have any other suggestions on what he might research regarding hydraulics for his science project?

Thanks

Since all liquids tend to be almost uncompressible, the major difference in hydraulic fluids have more to do with temperature, viscosity, compatability with seals and clutches and lubrication than ability to lift a load.

Wen's post reminded me of something that might work for a science project: the affect of air entrapment on hydraulic performance.
