This is probably a real dumb question, but here goes......

I have read a lot of discussions about the 2320/2520 and the difficulty some have in mowing while in high range.

The question I have (as a real novice, never having had a multi range hydro) is, since both ranges of the transmission start the tractor moving from a zero stop, why can't you use high range, and just not travel faster than the tractor will mow?

I realize the transmission is geared differently in each range, but once you increase the throttle to your operating RPM's are you not putting out the same power, regardless of the tranny range?

As I said, a real newbie type question, but I am having difficulty understanding how the dual range hydro works.

Mowing in too high of a range is similar to trying to only drive a car in third gear. Higher ranges have a more sensitive foot pedal range. They will also not allow the engine to make its power when going up hill or when turning sharp. Increasing speed can take more power than in low ranges and can dip the rpm's.

People with level lawns will not notice it as much as people who have any grade to their yard.

Thanks.......I understand the concept a little better, when you compare it to and automotive application. Kinda like trying to start a manual transmission car in 3rd gear from a stop.

2 more cents chiming in here: When I mow in Hi range, a slight touch on the HST pedal tends to make a big jump in speed, not what you usually want when mowing.

When I mow in Low, all changes in speed are very controlled & smooth, since you're using the HST pedal's entire range instead of just a very small span of it.

If you have pretty much flat land or if it is sloped it's what you would call terraced,(like mine) and not some mountain side:). Mowing in high range is a dream. I don't have any abrupt speed change when the pedal is applied,at least not on my 2520. It's all about getting used to it. I'm a helluva lot smoother after 50 hours than I was at 2.:)
If you have the R's set where they are supposed to be,power is definitely NOT lacking in high range.Again,I'm talking about my own experience with my tractor.

Thanks everyone for the replies. I haven't got my new 2520 yet, and after reading a lot of the posts on this forum, started to have concerns about the 2 range hydro.

I have pretty much flat surfaces where I will be mowing, and my Salesman who knows my property says I will definetely be using the high range for mowing. But when you see all the comments about the problems others seem to be having, it sort of makes you wonder if you made the right choice.

Thanks again.......

No problems at all; Just put it in the appropriate range as needed.

I have no clue why anyone would want to mow in Hi gear? Theres no way a mower could keep up with those crazy fast speeds. :confused2:

The discussion here is Hi range on an HST machine, rather than Hi gear.

Very true. A lot of misconception about speed with hydros when in high range. Just because it is labeled HIGH,doesn't mean that you go like a bat out of ****.
You can be just as gentle in high as in low with speed. It's all about getting used to using those pedals.

I have a 2320 with the 62D MMM
I mow mostly in low range but have used high range
My lawn is not super smooth so I find that mowing in High range is just to fast and I just get bounced around too much.
In low range according to the manual is 4.5 mph and that is fast enough on my lawn.
I would suggest there would be very few lawns that are smooth enough to mow faster than 4.5 mph on a CUT or SCUT. but, that may be just me.
Also, mowing any faster than the 4.5 mph does not leave the nice cut I get when mowing at or below the 4.5 mph
