Hope I don't over stay my welcome with too many questions. Do you have to come to a complete stop before changing ranges on a Hydrostatic. Still haven't gone out to try a hydro yet as I'm not ready to buy for a while yet. I know if you guys will put up with me I'll remember your opinions and answers much more so than I'll remember to check all of these things out when I go to test drive.

Thanks in advance
Steve

Your transmission will appreciate it if you do!! Yes you should stop and use the clutch when changing the range selector for your hydro. I can change ranges without the clutch, but am repeating the instructions in owners manual for Kubota.

There is no clutch on the hydro, at least not on any I have been on. You should come to a complete stop when changing ranges whether its hydro, gear, shuttle shift, power reverser etc.

Jeff . On my 3130 there is a clutch . The pedal is on the left side of the machine . pretty much where I'd expect a clutch pedal to be . The only time it's used is on start up and changing gear ranges . John

Gotta clutch on my TC18 Hydro........I only use it for PTO engagement though. And yes I TRY to come to a complete stop to change direction, but it stops so quick after you lift off the pedal anyway.

edit
Read the post wrong. Yes come to a complete stop before you change RANGES

On my NH TC-30 hydro, one should always come to a full stop and use the clutch when changing ranges.

Having said that, I can often change without using the clutch, but am stopped or very nearly so and never under load when changing range. Most of the time, you select a range for a task and stay in that range, so this is not a frequent action.

There are probably some hydro trannys that do not use a clutch and that may even allow range shifting 'on the fly'.... the dealer can tell you if it applies to their model.

If you are new to hydro tractor transmissions, keep in mind that when you press either the forward or reverse pedal you are initially in maximum (for that range) torque/minimum speed mode and as you press the pedal more you are going toward the maximum speed/minimum torque end of the curve.

The power available is dependent upon the throttle setting and generally should be at or near rated power RPM (the RPM required for rated PTO speed of 540 RPM) in order for the charge pump to keep up with the maximum demands of the variable displacement (main 'traction') pump.

If you approach an uphill and the tractor slows, easing up on the pedal is more likely to keep you going than pressing down more. Depending on steepness and load, you then may have to stop and select a lower range.

The hydro pedal(s) do not act like an accelerator. You get used to it quickly when you understand what it is doing.

Rip,
I appreciate that info on the Hydro Speed Change. I just purchased a NH1630 with hydro. I noticed when on the highway in III range the more trottle I give and the further I push the forward leaver, the tractor doesn't neccessary go any faster. In fact I was worried that my transmission was slipping.

FYI ... for ALL hydrostatically controlled transmissions with more than 1 range (I've only seen 2 or 3 range hydros), a clutch is present. Whether or not one choses to use it is another question (looking at my CEO).

Lawn/Garden type hydros usually have a single range and thus no clutch.

Log and File it.

My 2210, kinda in between tractor and lawn/garden, has two range hydro with no clutch. Yes, I stop before changing ranges.
