If you're completely stopped, you don't need the clutch to change ranges; however, on the ones I'm familiar with that have clutches (and others may be different), that clutch is also used to engage/disengage the "live" PTO. Personally, I tend to prefer that arrangement. The other arrangement, whereby the foot clutch is not used, is known as a "live independent" PTO that you simply engage/disengage with the PTO lever, but that type actually has a built in clutch just for the PTO. Either one works just fine. I just prefer the foot clutch.

Mine has the lever for electricaly activated PTO engagement and the clutch. I'd have to verify but beleive its a live PTO. Meaning the clutch has no effect on PTO engagement.

The clutch on my hydro TC18 is required to engage/disengage the PTO. I like it, for a simple reason. When I'm brush hogging, if I sense the cutters getting into something that may stall or hinder the cutting action, I just dump the clutch pedal. Everything stops -- tractor, PTO, and whatever was hindering the cutter stops the blades. All before any damage is done. Then, I disengage the PTO, let out the clutch and use the hydro pedal to slowly back off whatever it was that I hit (barbed wire, too thick a sapling, rock, chunk of wood, mound of dirt, whatever). Then, I engage the PTO again and slowly pull forward, usually chewing up whatever was in the way. Then, I can get going faster, again. It's saved my blades, gearbox, shear pin, tranny, whatever and etc., more times than I can count.

My Father-in-Law's new JD4115 does not use a clutch per-se either. The pto's are engaged with a pull type electric switch on the dash once the operator selects the particular pto he/she wants to use. The hydro is direct driven from the engine and therfore no clutch is necessary for that function. The pto clutches are an independent electro/hydraulic for each pto shaft I believe.

I verified the PTO operation this weekend. With the PTO running at idle and nothing attached I pushed in the clutch and the PTO rpm went up a few.....hmmmm. Wasn't gonna grab it to see if it would stop./forums/images/graemlins/crazy.gif

Connected the roller pump and did the same thing...it stopped.
So I was wrong in my assumption on the live PTO. The PTO will disengage with the clutch depressed.

No clutch on my JD4100 Hydro either.

Nope....not on my JD 855.

Finally had the TC24DA out for a test drive yesterday. I'm definitely getting the hydro version (whether its NH or Kubota). As for the treadle pedal, didn't mind it a bit. Picked up on the treadle pedal as if were the accelerator on my old Kubota. Thanks for all of your input on this subject.
