Hydrostat Case IH DX33 Question

I have a late model DX33 Hydrostat with 100 hours. If you push the bucket into the ground or against something solid it will not spin the tires or choke the engine down in 2nd gear. Is this correct? Is there something wrong with the transmission or is this normal for this type of tractor? One dealer I talked to says this is normal. Would like to hear from others who have this type tractor. Thanks.

I do not have DX. But do have a 30 hp tractor with HST. When trying to dig in to a pile of dirt. I need to shift into low range to get tires spinning. Running the engine at around 2000 rpms and not pushing all the way down on HST pedal will usually get me into the pile in second gear if dirt is not hard packed clay. Remembering to not push harder on the pedal when tractor starts to bog is a art that needs to be leaned on all HST tractors.

Pushing the pedal further down in effect changes to a higher gear at a given RPM. I don't have enough HST time to know about the stall characteristics of the engine or transmission.

That said, if I was forced to guess and only if I was forced, I would guess you have a pressure relief valve that is opening up too soon.

I have the same tractor with 60 hours on it. I use second gear when picking up a buckets of mulch or moving snow. It will bog down in second under heavy load but luckily there is a first gear /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif. I use first for any heavy work like moving large rocks or digging into a dirt pile. I always have more power than traction in first gear.

I'd say that is completely normal. I get the same thing even in low range on my tractor when I'm in 4wd and the rear differential locked. You can have significant downpressure from the bucket and the traction of the front wheels added to the rears causes the transmissions relief valve to lift. It's really easy to do in range II.

Anytime I want to see my rear tires spin, I put it in low range and go to 2wd. Even with differential lock, both rear tires will spin like crazy. /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

In range II, my DX33 will pop the relief valve if I am pushing against something solid. In range I, all 4 tires will spin.

Better to spin tires than break something internal.
