I have a hydro and love it. If I was going to buy a new tractor I would look for a hydro, but if a good deal came along on a geared transmission new or used I could learn to live with shifting gears again.

The only thing I can say that I'm not totally 100% satisfied with is my reverse power. I have more power going forward, sometimes I'll pull down into a ditch or something and will have a little trouble back back out with a full bucket. I've learned not to do that.

I hear a lot of pro hydro/pro gear transmission debate on this forum. My questyion is has anyone hear ever owned a hydro and decided there next tractor would be a geared tractor because they thought geared tractors were better and did not like the hydro as well ? )</font>

I finally got out of shifting gears in trucks and cars back in 1989 an there's no way I'm getting beck into that with tractors.

No, I love my hydrostat and no one can make me change.

Now if I came across the right antique tractor, the fact that it was a gear drive would not enter into the purchase decision.

Heck, I guess I like them all. But I love my hydrostat.

For any newbies reading this thread, please know that with a geared tractor you do not shift it like you do with a car/truck with a manual transmission. With a tractor you pick the gear suitable for the task you want to complete, e.g., plowing, disking, cutting grass, etc. and start working.

Mike, excellent point. Another newbie point for folks who use their tractors as big lawn mowers and occasionally do other tasks, I think it is also fair to point out that mowing conditions should really be considered. IF there is a big field to mow, then pick a gear and go. IF there is a lot of contour and elevation changes with landscaping, trees, planter beds, etc to mow around then you might be in a situation where you need to vary your speeds and gears when you come to an obstical and change your direction, this would lead to gear changes at the corners, planters, etc. But the operator is obviously not shifting in the middle of a row. I think that might be part of the reason why all the sub-CUTS are only available in HST?

My G.M. is a gear guy, he used one of my HST tractor for mowing and was immediately sold on HST for that purpose.
