Hydrostatic vs Non

Noticed your tractor is a larger compact. I also have a Kubota L4330 that the HST is quiet. It's more of a small tractor HST issue. I had a 27 HP LS J2030H (NH Boomer 25), just traded in, that also made more HST noise than the larger tractor. Maybe the larger mass dampens the noise better.

Yes, that is been my experience as well. The larger the tractor, the quieter the hydro. I think it may have something to do with the size of the passages that the oil flows thru. But I can't prove that. I run SUDT2 in my tractor as well.

If you are trying to decide between a hydrostatic and gear transmission for your tractor, think of the letter "L", when it comes to when the hydro is better: 1) Lawn mowing 2) Loader work 3) Landscaping 4) Ladies 5) Lazy folks.

If you or your usage don't fall into those 5 categories then you might be best served with a gear transmission.
Now that's funny :D :cool2:(...and true!) I fit in 4 out of 5 and the one I don't fit in, my wife really wanted to be able to use the tractor every now and then... (so glad she spoke up, I was aiming to get a gear transmission).

It is for sure. I had never used a hydro, until about 15 years ago, when my brother in law gave me his old Ingersol Lawn-mower tractor. After using that, I could never go back to a gear tractor for that regular usage. I do keep a gear lawnmower around, for when the grass gets too thick and I can't afford to loose the efficiency, but 95 % of the time I cut my acre of grass with a hydro. I blew the engine in the Ingersol after a couple years and have had (2) more hydros since then. The John Deere LT150 that I use now and was given to me by another brother in law, is still going strong.

As far as the loader work goes, I don't do a whole lot of it, and I get by ok with a "power-reverser" JD 4120 at home. That is basically a gear transmission that you don't need to clutch. The Case 580C hydro TLB, that I used at work, was much nicer for that. Landscaping is about half loader work and half lawn mowing, so the hydro is definitely better there. Some day, I might try and get our 16 year old girls to help with the lawn mowing, but I would never attempt it with a gear-drive. There is certainly more physical effort involved in using that.

So is mine. M59 Kubota.

I see this is an older debate. I知 not brand loyal or transmission loyal. Doubt I get the hours on any compared to many on here. But I. I壇 work in logging industry for a while. The equipment takes as much or more abuse than a farm tractor and most of that equipment was hst. I壇 haul 5 cords of wood over stumps on mountainsides and the hst was never an issue .
