Hydrualic Oil versus Motor Oil

I have a unit that calls for Castrol 20W50 synthetic Motor Oil only for the hydraulic system.
Chris
Ouch, that could be expensive if it holds a lot. . .

My Kenworth's transmission takes a 50W synthetic oil that cost over $30/gallon. What did you say, Ouch?
But, the oil change interval on that transmission is 500,000 miles.

I think I can run everything with ISO 46 hydraulic fluid and then have all my engine oil be 15W40 Mobil 1 Delvac. The guy at the dealership yesterday told me I would ruin my tractor engines and hydraulic systems if I didn't use Case or New Holland brand fluids. He said Rotella and Delvac is a sure way to ruin them

That should simplify it. Right now I've been using the same engine oil, but I've got all kinds of different hydraulic fluids.

I have a good customer that buys nothing but new Kenworths and he drains the synthetic out of the trans and puts standard gear lube back in!! Put a PTO on a new unit and wanted to top the tranny off, so I asked him to bring me some oil and when he showed up with 85/140 that stirred a few questions. Maybe you can't teach a old dog new tricks!. CJ

85/140 will probably be ok. That's his choice, but the manufacturer of my transmission, Eaton RoadRanger, designs it to use the 50w synthetic. I'll go with their recommendation.

Yea, that's what I tried to tell him, but hey he gets 500 to 700,000 miles out of them so you can't really fault him for using what works. CJ

Ouch, that could be expensive if it holds a lot. To the OP, Basically like JJ said it all comes down to weight and the additive package. One of the mechanics around here always said any oil is better than no oil!! A lot of truth to that. CJ

Holds about 2 gallons. Not a big deal.

Make sure you know what you are asking for or want. There is no Mobile Delvac 1 15w-40. Philip.
