And hot dogs were cheaper than each of the above. I don't eat much red meat anymore, but won't have any pork until September so decided to pick a bulk hamburg pack to freeze some burgers. YIKES! The cheap stuff in bulk was 4.99$/lb, London broil steak was 2.59$. I bought the latter of course, froze a couple of pounds and have one on the grill now, along with fresh dug potatoes. :licking:

You need to mortgage your house to buy a steak from the supermarket here, these days. And my eyes just about pop out of my head when I see a $80.00 (cdn) Prime Rib Roast!

A good friend gives me local hamburger. What a difference over store bought!

I think my last meal could be potatoes over meat.

IMO the only frugal way to buy choice cuts of beef from a chain grocery is when they mark down the prices based on the sell by dates etc...
I prefer aged beef anyway so it usually not a problem if it's not going to get used for a while after the sell or use by dates..the darker the better IMO...

Can usually get quality cuts like rib eyes, porterhouse, delmonicos etc. for close to half of the original prices...

My brother raises beef so I haven’t bought any in years, of course I mow his lawn for three hours a week every week so we’re good..

/Pine. that is EXACTLY how I buy my meat. And if that cut has been on sale, you could get it at another 30% or even 50% off. Nice and brown!

My same friend who gives me the Hamburger used to raise Beef. He is always going on about how stupid people are to buy "steaks" when they should buy a roast and cut it into steaks.

Yes well, I just paid $9 for 2 rusty heads of lettuce. Diets suck and crappy salad fixin's don't make it any easier.

we eat so much fish and chicken these days, beef only when T-bones are $6.00 or less a lbs. Then we buy the 3 pack and freeze the other two. But we share a steak and have left overs!

I can agree with the OP, odd how what we think as low cost cuts can be as high or higher than good cuts. Easy example is chicken wings! Really all fat, skin and bone. If we want "buffalo" chicken, my wife cuts boneless chicken thighs in to strips and drowns them in hot sauce.

I grew up on a beef farm, all we ate was beef. For the last 10 years we have been going to our local farmers market and buying wild caught salmon frozen. local store has frozen Red Snapper under $10/lbs. We share a 1 lb pc of fish. Pushing 60 years, we just don't eat so much any more. Ever tried Black Cod?, AKA Sable Fish. At $28/lb we don't have it often, but man o man it sure is good if just baked a real short time and a dash of butter!

We buy most of our meats at Sam's Club for less than they charge at Walmart. Like /pine, I usually look at Walmart to see what they've marked down; sometimes buy, sometimes don't. And like Paddy, my wife only cooks one steak at a time. She cuts off about a third or less for herself and I get the rest. But I haven't bought any steak except ribeye in a long time. But we do both like fish and chicken, too.

We saw $5.99/lb. T-bone and $1.99 80/20 ground chuck in sale flyers last week. For some reason I didn't make it there to buy any. We usually stock up the freezer at those prices.

I have red meat about once every other month. I eat so much chicken - even my farts cluck. I buy Foster Farms @ Costco. Along with 25# bags of wild rice.
