Here's a menu from K&W (cafeteria style restaurant now) from 1937. Some surprising items and prices.

When I was a kid poor people ate lamb and the rich ate chicken, beef was affordable if you had a good job, now chicken is cheap and lamb is a luxury.
SWMBO works in the chicken industry and gets bulk whole birds for under $1 each, I get sick of chicken and lust for an eye fillet steak at $35 kg.

^^^^ I would take you up on that. I can raise pork for about what it goes for in the grocery store, but it's much better quality. Someday I will raise a couple of steer just to say that I did. It seems like they really should be kept through 2 summers though to make it worthwhile. You may not have found that to be the case.

I have Black Angus so I finish them at about 18 months to get around a 750# hanging weight.

How are those prices compared to what people were making though? Back then there was no minimum wage, no 40 hour work week, and certainly no retirement fund or vacation time.

Whenever I can find an old restaurant thats still cooking fresh meals like they did back then I dont care what it cost, I'm eating there.

In the sixties I used to go around the corner to the Dairy Bar and get a Strawberry Milkshake for thirty five cents. A real made one! Not that artificial poo that comes out of a machine that you can't suck through a straw! I think all candy bars were pretty much a dime.

To be honest, I have no idea. Just thought folks might find it interesting.

I was saddened when the ice cream truck went from a nickle to 6 cents. It was hard enough scrounging for the nickle.

If you had a job and were frugal, you could get ahead. I'm not sure it's that way anymore. People didn't spend a fortune on their kids to go to soccer or hockey. Stuff like that. Peoples lives were not filled with gimmicks and devices! A house maybe had one B&W TV. And one telephone. Pretty simple existence compared to today.

I had no idea we were poor growing up. I was always happy and well fed. I do remember we would run out of butter on occasion and have to use Crisco on our toast. Never stunted my growth any. I can honestly say that I have never gone to bed hungry.
