Since I read this thread the other day, I have been craving a meat loaf. Got it in the oven now.....and the mashed potatoes in progress. :licking:

We have two chest freezers. One we try to clean out around October for some venison. Otherwise, anytime there is a good deal on a whole hog we grab it. Same with chicken or beef at the store. If it hits a really good sale, at the register you would think we are trying to feed an army.

Everything tastes better when you get it for a great deal.

We have a pound of Italian Sausage and a pound of Loin thawing out. Both Venison. I've never heard the term Goverment Beef to refer to venison, until today.

I wonder about raising beef, but I only have 50 acres and I've been told that you need at least 2 acres per head of cow. After the area we use for orchard, I don't really have much left for a couple cows. My wife wants goats but only for pets. I'm thinking it would be nice to have a dozen or so and only have a couple that are pets. Send the rest to the butcher.

I have a pond that is just over an acre and I need to start harvesting about 50-60 lbs of blue gill and 10 lbs of bass each year to properly manage it. I imagine that gets me significantly less meat. perhaps 3 lbs of bass and 10lbs of blue gill. I will probably kill 2-3 deer so that's another 120-150 lbs of meat, but I'll give a fair amount to my daughter.

Beef stew, meat loaf, venison sausage and loin, I find myself regretting that I started this thread as you guys have me drooling all over my keyboard. :licking: :laughing: like WCDad I think about raising beef, but only a couple at a time. Two acres of good pasture per head seems to be what's recommended, but you can get away with less if you supplement it with hay, which I would have to do in winter anyways.
I thought about leasing a friend's field until I calculated the cost of fencing it; if I invest that kind of money it will be on my own land.

Our local grocery chain has sales that are 10 items for $10 and the 11th item is free. I picked up a pound of bologna for $1.00. Thick cut. There's 8 slices in there. So you could get meat for 90 sandwiches for $10, plus bread, mayo and cheese, of course!

The garden helps us a bunch as well as deer in the fall. That and buying in bulk (whole hogs, etc.) when there is a deal worth it.

Amazing what a $100 won't buy you these days. Seems everything costs more....and more than wages have increased.

But, in some sick way, it has only helped my family. Helped us learn how to can stuff, grow our own stuff, and likely eat a lot better than most slamming down McDonalds chased with a Starbucks.

Sometimes, it's the things you can't really afford that aren't good for you in the first place.

Tried the BeyondMeat burger at A&W last week, like the name implies theres no meat in there, the patty is all plant-based protein. Tasted great, a glimpse into the future maybe?

Don't read the I ingredients list... Would not feed that to my neighbors dog.

For a family of 4, for everything including food and drinks along with household items, $200 a week is easy IMO.

My one boy will eat spaghetti for breakfast (at his moms dismay), make a couple of ham sandwhiches for lunch, and then eat 3 hamburgers for dinner looking for more. They both aint fat by any means either LOL

There's a HUGE gap between "being able to" and "having to"... And yes, it cost a lot more to feed kids, especially if you raised them/allowed them, to be picky...

I was always taught to either " Eat it or Wear it". and that "We are not running a restaurant here" and " Your Mom is not a Short Order Cook"! "Eat what is provided or don't eat at all". We were never allowed to be "picky eaters" and always had to eat everything on our plates. Hahahaha Fun Times!
