I need a replaceable CLEAR LENS for grinding, now is does this welding have this all theses features or no?

CLEAR? No.

Light enough to grind easily, yes.

Everything else, yes.

On grind mode it won't darken. It'll just be the normal green you see.

Guess I'll stick with my Sellstrom 29311 hood, I have 10.5 auto darkening lens in it, plus a cheater lens, plus clear lens for grinding and seeing whats what. At work I was able to get a 3M Speedglas 9100 Air Welding Helmet, they start around $1,200.00 they dont like giving out, wonder why.

#10 used to be the standard lens in most old school arc welding shields. I personally preferred a darker #11 and sometimes a #12 for hotter welding, but #11 is what I used 90% of the time. #5 was standard for cutting torch & gas welding. As someone who has had their eyes burned when I was a young beginning welder, it does not take but once to learn the value of good shades. Ouch!

I know a guy same age as me, 59 as we went to school together. He runs his own welding business. To my knowledge he uses no eye protection at all. I have watched him weld several times and never a welding helmet. Just his prescription glasses. I have not bothered to ask him about it but it baffles me how he could even do that or want to. I know I am not going to try it. I had to weld up something right quick once and was summer and was wearing shorts. Could not have welded much over a minute and it sunburned my white legs. Won't do that again either.

I have lots of socks that are new but have little holes all burnt in them from spatter dropping. Also have specks on my phone screen from forgetting to remove it from my shirt pocket.

That is amazing.. let me tell you this, if you accidentally flash yourself for just a second, you will be seeing afterimages of the flash for quite some time. I can't imagine trying to weld with your eyes closed and doing much of a job. Not to mention burning your face off.. I have heard of idiots not using a shade 5 for gas welding, but you can't see the puddle worth snot without eype protection either, not to mention sometimes the puddle pops, and slings molten steel around... This is just stupid... That is all I have to say. Arc welding or TIG or MIG welding is as bright as the sun or brighter.

Just theory, I'm not going to test it! ... I've read that polycarbonate, the plastic in eyeglasses and welding masks, blocks the UV that damages eyes. But in addition you need tint to tame glare so you can see what you're doing. Possibly that old friend is getting enough protection from his eyeglasses.

As I said, no way would I try this myself!

I totally agree. I really should ask him how he does it be cause I would not have believed it myself if I had not seen it. You are right, it would be like looking at the sun and so bright how could you see what you are doing but some how he is doing it. I only see him maybe a couple of times a year but I think I am going to have to ask him.
