And a downside to a cab for an even more touchy subject.
There is NO downside to the cab. Ive had both....no open station ever again.

And no $430 glass to shatter on the OOS. I was mostly kidding though, my opinion is the upsides outweigh the downsides to cabs.

The story KiotiJason just posted seems to be an argument for HST though.

Lets not bring this thread there though:thumbsup:

I get what you are saying rmorey, a week ago I brought firewood up to the house with the bucket. I stopped in the drive to unload. Normally I always lower the bucket and the implements down to the ground before shutting it off and getting off. This time I didn't, I left the bucket up and I also left it in gear. So my deviated from my usual method. Well I came back an hour later to empty the bucket and half way through thought I'd run the tractor to warm up the engine so when I was finished I can put it away. Well before I go any further no one can be as hard on myself for a stupid mistake as me, I do feel foolish so go easy on me because the chain of events meant I broke some Cardinal rules. I stared the tractor while I was on the ground. As soon as I took the my foot off the clutch, the tractor shot forward and whent straight over my leg. Fortunately I had my car about 5 foot in front so the tractor bashed into the back and pushed it a bit till it luckily stalled. I was now pinned under the tractor and in a fair bit of pain, it took a bit to come to my senses and after calling out for about 5-10 mins I realised that no one could hear me. The next bit of luck, the tractor was on a bit of a decline so I eventually reached up and pushed the clutch down with my hand and the tractor rolled off my leg. Wow, I'm still can't believe how stupid I was and how luck I was to get out of it. While I was pinned under the wheel all I could think of is thank god I was in the driveway so someone will find me, if I was up the back of my block I would have been there for hours. So a bit of damage to the vehicle and massive damage to my pride but I got out lightly. I'm a bit bruised and have torn the ligaments in my leg and bruised my hip but a small penalty, so I got out lightly. I've really had a rethink about be complacent around the farming equip.
Wow. Glad you're relatively ok, slightly injured and lived to share this reminder. There's a lot of people who've done the same and didn't.
I've started a tractor or two while standing to the side, not a good idea, but staying scared about it (double checking it's in park, or having one leg on the step ready to take a ride if it is somehow in gear) is a good thing.
Don't beat yourself up about it, you can't take back the past.

One thing we are all missing here is always lower the loader and any 3pt attachment. You could be saving a life, or serious injury. I can remember reading several articals over the years of kids playing around an unattended parked tractor, and someone getting hurt or killed by a disk harrow, loader bucket, or other piece of equipment dropping on them when a kid climbed in the seat and pulled a lever.

Last summer I saw a worker get his knee busted wide open when a co-worker started up their tractor that had a 3pt seeder attached. He was standing next to the seeder filling it, when it suddenly rose and a sharp edge got him. They had not lowered it the night before and it bled down until the tractor started. 23 stitches and knee surgery later to repair the tendon or something (almost took knee cap off) They also got a pretty stiff fine for unsafe work place and equipment usage from OSHA.

Also if you going to work on a raised piece of equipment, please use safety jacks or blocking. You never know. I almost got clobbered by my own loader bucket while greasing when my sons cat jumped up in the seat and hit the lever in the process (It was his favorite napping spot). Note: WAS!!!! his spot.

Thanks, a real reality check.
I've bought a rubber wheel chock, never again will I do that!

I'll second that! No more freezing in winter, sweltering in summer, getting caught in a thunderstorm, and NO MORE yellow jackets!

Not that your blocking idea is not a good idea, but you do know that just about all modern loader controls come with a locking lever device to prevent "kitty" or "kiddie" from operating the FEL control. Blocking is probably more sure than the lock, but the lock, like a safety on a gun is better than nothing. It is all about layers of safety.

'The message here is don't forget to..........' THAT can be a tall order for some of us  BUT I am learning to 'failsafe' some of my 'ideas'. For instance: Due to space considerations I park my CK with the FEL bucket in the 'dump' position with the cutting-edge resting on the barn floor which leaves enough room behind it to park my hi-wheel trimmer between the bucket and front tires. My wife watched this bit of genius being implemented and opined that I ought to take the key out of the tractor and hang it on the blade engagement bar on the trimmer's handlebar, which I did. Yesterday, I got on the tractor, depressed the clutch and reached for the key to start ........ Ooooops! Got off, moved the trimmer and retrieved the key; saved the day! :D (I used to ask myself, when faced with wifely comments, .... 'Oh yeah? If you're so smart why did you hook up with me? I have stopped that 2nd guessing and, mostly, just 'go with the flow') Bless her heart, anyway!

Couldn't agree more!

As I get older, I find I have to try to "failsafe" more and more to avoid saying the name of this thread every day:eek:

The problem I have is distraction. For example, I know the ROPS won't fit under that machinery shed roof - I go into that shed nearly every day, and nearly every day I stop at the right place. But I've hit it twice now by being distracted by worrying about the implement on the back clearing a post. There are plenty of simple solutions, but I now have a piece of pipe hanging in front of the roof truss so that I will knock it first - because I know I will do it again no matter how hard I try not to.

This is a simple thing that won't cost much in dollars or blood when it goes wrong. But I'm really trying to get into the habit of lowering buckets and implements etc. in the hope that it will be enough to save the rest of me when the brain goes missing for that second or two.

My wife is always ready with verbal reinforcement of a lesson...like the time I drove the tractor away from where it was parked on the lawn without first raising the bucket, or when I learned the hard way how wide the bucket and rear brush mower swing on turns (near the shed).
