I have tried several herbicides to control Johnson Grass in a Bluestem hay meadow. By far the best I have used is Outrider herbicide. It will kill the Johnson Grass without harming the desirable grasses. Outrider will not control broadleaf weeds, so if you do not have Johnson Grass it won't work on much of anything else. It is most effective when the Johnson Grass is less than 18" tall although it will kill larger plants, just not as quickly. Outrider is granular and mixes with water. I apply at a rate of 2 oz. per acre. Once Johnson Grass has matured and gone to seed, it is very difficult to control as the seed can remain in the soil for a long time just waiting for the right growing conditions to re-sprout.
