We have two Bostich coil nailers and might add a third. There is no comparison between air nailers and a hammer. They are so much faster it isn't funny. Also, keep your hammer with you anyways because you will occasionally get a nail that doesn't set all the way or hits another nail in the plywood and it is easier to have your hammer at your hip then on the other end of the roof.

I know you couldn't get the truck down to your shed and for 27 bundles it wasn't really worth the effort but for your house if you can get it in there go for it.

Von and Robert,

Thanks for the pointers on the roofing nailer. It sure was a pleasure using it. Yes it does beat using a hammer and holding those nails by hand...

I got the roof finished except for the ridge cap, if that is what you call it. As it sit now, it is fine as I overlapped the shingles on the top of the ridge...

Have to post some pics now...lost track of the days...it took at least three days to do the job.

I am pretty happy now that the roof is on. Can slow down and quit working from sun up to sun down. Even if I did take the afternoons off cause of the hot sun and 90 degree temps the first two days.

Pictures to follow...

Funny, but all I know is that today I got the roof finished, for all practical purposes. It has been the focus of my existance for the last three or four days. I would like to think it has been three days but I don't know for sure...I was going to post some pics now but I am falling asleep as I try...so I guess that will be tomorrow...

Who am I to argue with the voice of expereince? /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif But I would like it was the work that did it... /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

The first day involved finishing the edge boards on the roof so I could put on the drip edge and roof apron...That took the morning and a little of the afternoon as far as I remember.

Wasn't much of interest to take a photo of...

I think this shot was taken on the morning of the third day. On the second and third days I stayed off the roof from about 2 to 7 pm...did other things...too miserable under the clear blue sky and 90 degree hot sun temps...

Holes for the lower four skylights are cut out and the first is in place dew covered...

Towards the end of the third day. The day ended with the holes for the top four skylights cut out but none of the skylights in place yet.

This side of the shed faces almost due North, so you can get an idea of the time by the slope of the sun beams on the wall inside the shed...coming in throught the skylights

The 8x16 foot section of the original roof on the back. I was going to shingle over it, but just knew that if I did I would regret it, as there were be a hump at the transion between new and old.

I wanted to avoid the work of ripping off the shingles and disposing of them...but in the end I saw no way to do a good job and leave them on...glad I bought one of those shovels for ripping shingls off. Still took a while, but it was in the shade and pretty easy with that shovel!

Looks better already. Glad I had an extra roll of tar paper.

At this point I was sure I had made the right decision...

The transition between the old roof and the new came out pretty good. Can't tell where on ends and the other begins...

I think I may shingle that little shed roof hanging on the back with the same shingles. I told my neighbor Paul that I would not build anything new closer to his property than the original spring house foundation.

By the way, I saw Paul working outside a couple days ago and went over and invited him to come over and see my progress. During the conversation I mentioned that I had not thought about getting a building permit, and now I am a little nervous...

His reply was "You don't want to ask for a permit. Your Illegal. [referring to the 25' building line] To get a permit there would have to be a town meeting and it would be a lot of trouble..."

So I know for sure there is no misunderstanding between us about what I am doing... /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif
