What goes up easy comes down easy...2 bundles extra of shingles.

Except for picking them up on the far end of the roof, and carrying them over to the loader bucket!

Believe me, at the end of a 13+ non stop day, they felt at least four times as heavy as they did when my brother and I shared the load...

The finished roof. Just in tiime...rained last night.

Well, the 30 lb tar paper was keeping the rain out anyway, but it is always a great feeling to get a roof on!

If you look closely you can see I was sitting in my favorite seat when I shot this picture.

Final shot at the end of the day yesterday showing the position of the skylights.

Four are over the open area where the tractor and stuff will be, and the high four ones are over the part that will have windowless walls and doors, and be a secure, lockable area.

From this point there will be many small jobs to do...I'll post a picture now and then if there is anything of interest or some "major" progress occurs...

Today is a declared day of rest...guess I'll take a break and clean up some of the trash I threw off the roof!

Bill, I reckon that's about the biggest sundial I've ever seen.

Bird...That's funny. But there is one bigger...our house faces due South, and I set the angles using the shadow of a vertical post at solar noon. So the sun through the skylights does give a pretty exact time indication...or course, where we are located solar noon is about 30 minutes different from local time...

I cover the three skylights over the living room with something every Summer to keep the heat down. In winter they let the "Winter heat" in on sunny days.

Are you talking about my pole barn building experience? /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Your shed looks great but I am having a hard time calling it a shed. I think some others here who do have real sheds would agree that is hardly a shed. That is unless you are talking to your neighbors or the local government, then yes I would agree that is a shed.

I'm starting to feel like I should call it something different too... I guess it's because I started out with the idea to hang a roof off the side of the old shed...and the project evolved into more than originally planned.

I am happy with the way it is turning out. Then again, after calling it "the shed" this long, might be difficult to refer to it differently. /forums/images/graemlins/crazy.gif

Never quite understood why skylights are a good idea.... "you want to put a hole in my what?" -- not in my buildings or my cars .. just someplace to leak i figger. and the heat load they cause here in Tex is outrageous!
I did look at "solar tubes" with a little interest - but it's still an unwanted hole in my roof.

Nice job so far Bill. I suppose it is in your plans to put a gutter on the long side of the roof. It would help keep the water away from the wooden wall that you have. I know, I know, you are tired but just thought i would add my .02. /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif

mikim,

Depends on how much you like bright spaces. A skylight can make an amazing difference. In my case I like bright spaces. So...even in my home, which has a lot of large south-facing windows, we have three 4x4 skylights over the living room.

In the summer I cover them to keep the heat down, and it feels dark for a while until we readjust to the lower, but still bright light level.

I am with you on the holes in the roof idea though...I built my own skylights in the house and they don't leak...but I don't think good store bought ones will leak either...

On the shed I am happy that I put them in too...but that is just me.

No, actually I am an anti-gutter guy. I specifically did not include gutters on my home, as I think they are a maintenance pain in the rear, and don't see the need for them on the shed either.

The pressure treated wood of those "retaining walls" should not be bothered by rain runoff. Whatever rain gets in there should drain down to the french drain below the wall, and there is no dirt in contact with the wall, just crushed stone.

I expect those walls to outlive me, and I'm good for another 40 years minimum by my own optomistic estimate... /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

I appreciate the thought on the water thing. I was tired yesterday, but after doing nothing today I feel ready to put another 13 hour day in...but can't as we are going to West VA tomorrow for a couple days...
