I think it is regional, since the manufacture in northwest Arkansas calls it a Dovetail.

Mine is option 1, 4 foot Dovetail. Equipment trailers from Delta Single Wheel Flatbeds

I don't think it really matters, they a basically the same thing. The industry refers to both these types of decks in both terms. I have to say I have seen some very nice trailer combinations on TBN. I have been wanting to purchase one for a very long time now.

Man I really like the look of deck over trailers. That is what I want to purchase when I buy one, but my primary usage will be hauling water for my house, and the local trailer shop is trying to discourage hauling water with a deck over.
They say an equivalent length deck over weighs more than a car hauler/ equipment trailer.

Personally I bought this trailer based on my lifestyle to cover multiple uses. I am in the trucking industry so my lifestyle involves Pallets & forklifts. It is simply a mindset for me. I prefer to be able to side load my trailer with forks on my loader or a forklift when available. What do you transport water in, I assume your using some kind of tote? I am curious as to what kind of vessel you planning on using. I can't imagine that the difference in the weight of the trailer can be that significant, I might think a higher center of gravity might be a concern but then that could be a benefit draining the vessel.

I worked At A sawmill growing up and it was a pain to load a bundle of lumber onto a low trailer. The fenders were in the way and you had to slide the wood on from the back. That is why I would like a deck over.
Currently I have water delivered by the tandem truck load. 5 of the 6 delivery companies raised their rates to a point where it will be cheaper to haul my own. Once the 6th company raises there rate I will be buying a tank and trailer.

True. I would not haul water or any fluid on a deck over. I would want a low Center Of Gravity.

Hauling a liquid is a whole different ball game vs a soild object of similar weight.

If you haul more than 500 gal of water you need a big trailer and a big tank. Most 1000+ gal tanks I have used are 7' or wider thus you need a deck over. I have a 1600 gal tank I haul on my gooseneck and it is fine. Got a new phone or I would share photos of it.
Fyi there are a lot of dedicated water trailers/nurse tanks out there if that's what you need but don't get a used one that may have had ag chemicals in it.

I would live a dedicated trailer, but the price is way to high. I am still torn between a max tow F150 and a diesel F350 so that will truly decide which way I go. I want the diesel, but I am not sure if I can justify the extra $$$

image.jpgI don't see any reason why you couldn't carry four 250 gallon totes on a deck over trailer. 1000 gallons of water weighs 8,345 lbs. I would not hesitate to haul that in 4 totes on a deck over trailer. Now if your talking a single tank that's a different story because liquid crawlers up the sides and surges from back to front and back again. If the water is for human consumption then you can not use a baffled tank. If you are purchasing a trailer for multiple use then 4 food grade poly tanks makes perfect sense. This should eliminate most of the effects of liquid surge and simplify the ability to remove the tanks to use the trailer for different applications. Depending on the tractor you could even off load a full tote, it would certainly be no problem for a fork lift at just over 2000 lbs a tote.

These totes are $240 each new but this is how I would transport food grade water in a domestic setting on a deck over trailer.
