The only reason I buy hay is for mulching newly installed culverts and ditches. I used to try to find the best price, then realized I'd save the client's money if I bought at the most convenient place rather than driving around to save a buck per bale.
One time years ago the hay guy thought that since it was for "the company" it was a chance to get rid of his worst bales. They were so light that they almost blew out of the truck. I ended up eating the price because I couldn't in good conscience charge for them, and at that time I was subcontracting so my name was on the invoice.
I never bought hay from him again.
