The masks are to keep you from coughing droplets out into the air. You wear them to protect others, not yourself. ;)

Your statement is 100% correct, but most who do wear a mask THINK they are protecting themselves.

Look at all the PPE the the health care workers are wearing. Most times they wear 2 masks, a face shield, gloves, and all the clothing. They have been doing this for 10 months and they really need a break. I sure hope they get help if they suffer from PTSD from this never ending battle.

Eddie - You haven't posted in a couple days. I hope you're getting rest and will fight through this soon.

And now the mask police come out. Guess Eddie's thread about him having covid will be closed due to the mask police.

I had covid. I didn't wear a cheap Chinese mask, and I don't intend to start

If you choose to believe in a cheap Chinese mask. By all means wear one.
I don't believe in cheap Chinese mask, and not going to wear one.

Cousins in Mississippi were so afraid of getting covid, they wore mask everywhere.
They still ended up with covid.
It's out there, If you don't get it, consider yourself lucky, not due to a cheap chinese made mask

but if you aren't sick, then no mask is needed...
It would be just like before covid. No one wore mask to keep others from catching colds, or the flu, or what ever else you may have had . You gonna wear a mask the rest of your life ? Now that it's started, they will want people to continue forever .

If anyone wants to wear one, fine, But don't expect everyone to wear one.
And, it wouldn't be wise to approach someone that isn't wearing one and berate them for it.

just require everyone to wear hazmat suits the rest of their lives. Would be much safer than a cheap mask:thumbsup:

How do you know you don't have it? From a Johns Hopkins study, in the 4 days immediately after you are exposed, there is a 67% false negative test result (that is, there is a 67% chance that even if you have the virus, you will test negative for it). Even when you first start showing symptoms, there is a 38% chance you will still test negative. after 7 or 8 days, the false negative test rate drops to about 20%. And those numbers are not counting the folks who never show symptoms so never get tested at all.

Again, the precautions are a matter of having some consideration for others, rather than just deciding for yourself whether you personally are willing to take the risk.

And how do you know you aren't sick?

How do you know you aren't carrying the virus, since you can be contagious 2-14 days before any symptoms may show up, if they do at all, because many people are asymptomatic and never show any signs of it even though they are contagious?

Wouldn't it be better for everyone to consider themselves infected and do the right thing, wear a mask when around other people, just in case you have it?

I don't want answers from you, just ponder that for a while.

Good post, you did use a big word though. Might be a good idea to explain this as there seem to be some simple-minded that might not know what that means.

Early in the pandemic we tested some masks at the research lab where I work. They can be highly effective at blocking transmission to other people. While bare virus particles can slip through a mask, when the particles come out of your mouth and nose they tend to be agglomerated together, stick to mucus, or stuck to moisture/vapor in your breath. Even a simple cloth mask is very effective at blocking those larger particles (70-100%). I don't think this has been communicated very well to the public.

By wearing a mask you are significantly reducing risk for those around you. In my opinion it's an easy selfless thing to do that doesn't require very much sacrifice. I'd go so far as to call it patriotic, but I think that concept has become warped lately. Historically, look back to WWI, the great depression, and WWII to see situations where US citizens had to sacrifice a little bit for the greater good. Compared to those events, I think asking people to wear a cloth mask for coronavirus is really not a big deal at all.

BTW, I took my daughter skiing on Monday. The ski mountain has a policy requiring masks in the lift line where people start bunching together. I'd say 95% of people were very good about this. And hey, wearing a mask while skiing is not a stretch anyway. I started the day only putting on my mask when we got to the lift line. By lunchtime, I just left it on the whole time, which was easier and less fumbling around.

I dont mind wearing a mask, just aggravated by the country/source of the virus and that partys lack of EMPATHY for the rest of the world having to deal with it, especially after that same country bought up most of the worlds PPE.
Anyway, at what point/where is it ok to remove your mask? Am I unpatriotic if I dont wear a mask while taking a brisk walk passing maybe only 1 or 2 people at some point in my rural neighborhood?

I got the old lady shaking her virtue-signaling head in disgust at me the other day whil taking a walk with nobody else in sight.
Maybe she didnt like the fact that I had nicer teeth and I was showing them off. :D
