Err, uh, what does it say on those signs? Speed LIMIT? Yep, as most of us, you look at it as the MINIMUM when legally it's the MAXIMUM speed allowed. While not real common, there ARE roads that also have an ACTUAL MINIMUM speed also shown; most commonly 15 to 20 mph below the MAXIMUM, I think.

But as I said, you're in the majority, looking at it as a MINIMUM. And in my experience, most police officers will not stop a driver doing less than 10 mph over the speed limit (except in school zones) and almost none of the officers will stop drivers doing less than 5 mph over the limit (except in school zones). So, yep, I'm a law breaker, too. I set my cruise control on the speed limit, but also sometimes 2 to 4 mph over the limit.

And I suppose many people don't know that in some places, you CAN actually be cited for Impeding the Flow of Traffic, and while I've not seen it happen, I've HEARD that it CAN happen even if you are driving the speed limit; e.g., staying in the left lane of a multi-lane roadway instead of moving over to the right lane when other vehicles are behind you.

Occasionally we get people complaining about people not staying in the right hand lane on the relatively short freeways we have around Saskatoon because it prevents them from speeding! Mind you the amount of traffic at certain hours requires both lanes to be used not to mention it gives people entering from a ramp to actually have room to get onto the freeway but...they seem to think it's their right to speed and to he!! with anyone else on the road. It's especially satisfying to see them trying to pass someone when the road is slippery and watch them kick it down into passing gear, instantly loose it and end up stuck in the ditch! I always like to let them know I approve of their driving skills and decision making capabilities by blowing my horn as I pass by.

Our Police Department's official position is that it is not legal to exceed the posted speed limit so it's a pretty sure thing that they won't give anyone a ticket for driving at the maximum allowed speed, right or left lane.

<snip>

Several years ago, The Washington State Patrol announced they would be doing a 'speeding emphasis patrol' on SR 195 (Lewiston, Id to Spokane, Wa). It is posted at 60 (2 lane highway). They announced hat their 'ticket point' would be 66mph. Anything at or above that would be ticketed, no warnings.

Been driving that route since 1976 and the flow has always been right at 64-66. Due to equipment variances (tires) and speedo accuracy, the courts will general not approve tickets that are only a few mph over the posted.

In many states, Washington is one, it is legal to "Speed while passing" but the vehicle being passed has to be at or under the posted.

Back at the original post... those are the same people who can't be bothered to clean the snow off their windows, and drive down the road looking through a scrape hole in their windshield.

I know two people who got run over because someone couldn't be bothered to clean off the condensation windshield. He had a red light and tried to make a RH turn without stopping. They were in the crosswalk and had a "Walk" sign. One ended up with a broken leg, the other with a sprained wrist.

Nah, just send them up to frive the 401 across the North end of Toronto. Busiest freeway in North America, with a minimum of 12 lanes. Lots of room for race-SUV drivers!

I've driven in most major cities in the US and I find the 401 is crazier than any. It was explained to me that all the drivers are wired on Tim Hortons coffee.

My personal rant is driving lights. When did they become a fashion statement? You can drive on a urban expressway with streetlights that light it up like daylight and 25% of the cars will have driving lights on.

We cut across Ontario from Niagara Falls to Sarnia on the way to MI about 5-6 years ago. The 403 passing through Hamilton, ON would take some doing to beat out. :) It was raining, dark and those folks were flying low bumper to bumper.

I probably would po some of you guys. I drive US23 quite a bit, and it is only 2 lanes in each direction. Frequently the right lane is solid trucks, trailers and slow traffic. Sometimes it isn't much more than 50 mph, or less, especially if they are moving machinery or modular homes, then it might be 45 mph. The left lane is 75 +. I get on, get into the left lane, and usually try to hold 75 or a bit more. If I pull over to the right, it's dangerous to get into it, and almost impossible to get back to the left lane. So I sit in the left lane. I've been passed on the shoulder, going near 80, several times, but I am not going to go 50 mph, so somebody else can go 85.

That's where the "go with the flow" approach runs into trouble on a busy four-lane divided highway like US 23 which I've driven many times. No matter how much you are speeding, there will always be someone who wants to speed more than you and it isn't easy, safe or practical to move over.

When we drove to Ohio for Thanksgiving the truck traffic was very light, especially coming home. You don't realize how much trucks impede a smooth flow of traffic until they are missing. I don't think any two lanes with high truck traffic work very well. Three lanes where trucks are prohibited from the far left lane works okay most of the time.

There is a huge but uncounted cost to moving freight with millions of individual trucks. We need better rail transport of all kinds.

Speaking of Ohio, I'll never forget going through Cleveland westbound on i-90 and the huge, sharp left curve. They have those big 8 foot tall flahing arrows, it was still sharper than I expected on an interstate. I think I was drifting through the whole curve on dry pavement. Luckily it was fairly late at night. I couldn't imagine it during heavy traffic. Live and learn I guess... WHEN THEY SAY SHARP TURN, THEY MEAN IT!

Yep another rant . 2 trucks side by side for 5 miles stacking everyone up . Ought to be a law . Actually is , just no enforcement .

Sounds like southbound I-35E in downtown Dallas at I-30. Occasionally an 18-wheeler turns over on that curve.

We call that a "Mexican Standoff".

Wikipedia :
In popular usage, the term 'Mexican standoff' is sometimes used in reference to confrontations in which neither opponent appears to have a measurable advantage.

One of my bigger complaints in this area is those who "creep" slowly through the entrance onto a freeway, causing traffic already on the freeway to brake and slow. And you can almost bet that once onto the freeway and having slowed other traffic, that person will very gradually accelerate to at least 10 mph over the speed limit.

Do you notice there is a pattern to traffic enforcement? Anything that slows down traffic is rarely if ever enforced.

Yep, that is a 90 degree turn with a little sweep in it.

You can avoid downtown Cleveland going west if you follow I-271 to I-480, assuming you want to be on the Ohio Turnpike west of Cleveland. I don't think it saves time, but I'm not in Cleveland often enough to really know. You can get caught in the Columbus-bound I-71 traffic going that way.

Want a really scarey ride? Drive through Manila Philippines late at night. Yes, I have a valid Philippine drivers license that expires in 2020!
