These water purification companies are a huge scam. You could call five different companies out to your house to give your water a "free" test, and they will give you five different solutions to fix your water. The real tip-off was the fact that they haven't had any real technical training-- they are commissioned salespeople! What does that tell you that your wallet is in for?

During the process of building our house this year, we were bombarded with mailings, and by salesmen showing up at the house. There are several companies that will give you all the information you need over the internet, and sell you a quality low-cost unit with no commission to pay! They are easy to install, and I had less than $1000 into it by the time we were finished

Egon fully realizes that demineralized water is not the best but he is also aware that there are too many factors in municipal water treatment that are beyond his control so he continues to use the reverse osmosis system.

He also realizes that not all minerals contained in water are benificial to his health.

These missing minerals can surely be relaced by a proper diet as Egon does not live on only water.

I suspect windshield washer fluid would be a poor substitute for bottled water, though it is often cheaper! /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif As to the formula, I think it probably varies with the brand. I think the cheap blue stuff I use contains methanol in significant amounts, and it smells kinda like windex. Hows that for specific info? /forums/images/graemlins/crazy.gif

Cindi, I have a background in environmental chemistry, and I used to work in a drinking water laboratory.

The test you saw, like someone said eariler, was probably just a hardness test. What they did was put it a chemical that precipitated out the minerals in your water. Minerals are usually harmless, and often beneficial. I wouldn't worry about them.

I also buy generic bottled water, because our well has a lot of sulfur in it, and I hate the taste, and almost all I like to drink is COLD water. The only water system that I would use is reverse osmosis. Basically what that is, is a system that forces water through a membranne that has microscopic pores that filter out contaminants. It is the type of water filtration system they use to get the purest water used in hemodyalisis, so it is very efficient. Carbon filters can grow huge amounts of bacteria in the filters, unless you change them VERY often. Usually, they need to be change more often than the manufacturer reccommends.

Where did you grow up? Wasn't it an area in Texas where if was first noticed that the high fluoride content of the water correlated with low occurrence of cavities? My teeth are yellow spots, except for the silver spots where I had cavities repaired. I'm now at the age where I don't get new cavities, but the old fillings are failing. I have all my wisdom teeth, and my dentist just spent an enjoyable two hours replacing a filling in the top left one. What fun. At one point both he and his assistant took up residence in there at the same time. Sometimes it's good to have a big mouth! /forums/images/graemlins/cool.gif

Mike, wouldn't Cindi's non- tractor, non-rural living post be appropriate for the "Related Topics" forum? I've seen topics there similar to hers, and hers certainly do not generate controversy or bad feelings. To the contrary, many of us enjoy her posts and will surely miss them!!

There's not a thing wrong with a counter-top still for making drinking water, if it is cost effective. I've never compared the various methods as to cost. I drink the water district stuff from the tap. My only problem with it is that it is so hard I have to clean out the coffee maker about twice a month if I want coffee in less than an hour or so. If I had a still, I'd probably be more inclined to see what kind of brandy my cider would make than to use it for drinking water. /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif
