I JUST HAD TO TELL SOMEONE, so I came to my friends here on TBN. The wife and I have wanted to leave the city for sometime but with 10 years before retirement we were not in a hurry. We have a second home in the mountains to fill the decompression needs and use the tractor. My father-in-law had some heart problems recently and had to have some serious surgery so we were spending a lot of time in the wife's home town. Between shifts at the hospital we made the ten mile trip out to some property that a family friend had on the market, just to take a look. Well we fell in love with this place. After a month of soul searching and a number of trips to the property we decided it was to special not to buy even if it does require an earlier move than we had planned. Well yesterday evening we reached a deal and will soon be rural homeowners.

Our new place is in N.W. Georgia about 60 miles from Atlanta. The land is a 32-acre tract that is heavily wooded with a mix of mature Pine and hardwood. There is roughly 3 acres cleared and nicely landscaped around the house and the 16x32 block out building. The house is a nice 3 bed, 2 bath with unfinished walk out basement. Most of the house has been redone in the last three years. There is a new septic, county water (also a good well), about 500' of paved drive and a good amount of paved road frontage. Now the part we could not walk away from was the 6 acre lake that sits about 40' behind the house. The lake is spring feed, 20' deep at the dam, has a new floating dock, very clear water quality, has been stable during our resent years of drought and is completely hidden from the surrounding properties. I believe I will be taking up fishing soon and I haven't been skinny dipping in years. /forums/images/graemlins/cool.gif

Of course I am already explaining to the wife that we will HAVE TO get a larger tractor and lots of new implements. I'll save that for another tread but as a true and loyal TBN member my mind is cooking.

Sorry about the long post, I JUST HAD TO TELL SOMEONE!

Sounds like a really beautiful place. I can well understand your excitement.

So can I ! It sounds great, especially the pond. Do you have any thoughts as to what you will do with the land? Are you going to try to utilize it or just enjoy it in it's current state?

Will you be getting any livestock?

It sure sounds nice. The best thing is that the chores that are work elsewhere are relaxing in the country when it's your property.

Congrats! Sounds great!

Good call Mark! Plenty of material for a retirement sawmill, and perhaps a business in hardwood flooring? <grin>

Seriously, it sounds wonderful! Near Stone Mountain?

Hey thanks all, we are excited and look forward to taking possession in August. We are not sure what the future will hold for the property. The appealing thing is we have enough room to make it what we want and we haven't had that before. We will be bringing a lake specialist out to inspect the dam and water for any hidden problems. He will also evaluate the fish population and make recommendations on that. Guess we can call ourselves Bass farmers. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

I think our first projects of size will be fencing and a barn. After all we will need a place to store that larger tractor and I kind of believe that 'good fences make for good neighbors'.

I'll work on those photos in the future. I haven't jumped into the digital age but this feels like a good excuse. I do believe I will miss the DSL line here in the city though. Seems like a minor trade off.

Thanks,
MarkV

Mark,
What is the closest town to the new spread? Sounds like a great place, particularly the lake. Good luck with the move.

Congrats! I don't think you'll ever regret your decision. When you find that "special place", you know it, and you might also know that it'll be a very long time before another one like it comes along.

Dang, sounds like I'm talkin' 'bout a woman /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif About the same thing /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Bmac, The property is 10 miles South of Cedartown or 20 miles North of Breman off of I20. Not to far for you to drop by for a little fishing sometime.

Thrilled for you. We retired and did it a year ago. We agree, we'll never go back. Country living is where its at!!!

I would like to offer my expertise in evaluating your fish population. I just bought a new rod, reel and box of plastic worms to check the bass population in our humble 1.5 acre pond. They should work really well in your six acre pond. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Best of Luck

Great Mark!!!! We love our little 8.5 acres in Springville (NE) of B'ham , Alabam. The pond though spring fed is only around 2 acres...HEY 2.5 after a realy big rain like that 10"s in 2hrs a week or so ago /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif and we have to share it with a few others but it is still the best thing we have done in the way of places to live. I get tickled every time some one asks how far we drive to work. 43miles one way. They can't believe it. /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gifBut that hour drive is worth every minute... when we get home at the end of the day and go out and play... The last leg 12miles or so is the best part 15min of country road up a moutnain and along the top. Man CAN I GO HOME NOW????? /forums/images/graemlins/tongue.gif The thing I love is once some one visit they start wondering how long it would take to get used to the drive... /forums/images/graemlins/smirk.gif

Any way best O luck! I know ya'll have a blast getting every thing just so...
Not to mention breaking in that new tractor..... /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif
Hey! If you need any BEAVER you're welcome to some of OURS! /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif
