On the charger topic.....
They definitly prefer to have a battery there, but I don't know too many of them that will reverse polarity automatically. I'm not sure what he was talking about.

I was over my place to clean up my garden yesterday. I checked the battery voltage before I started up to be about 12.9, charging voltage was 14.6 v @ 1500 engine rpm and went down to 13.2 at around 900 rpm idle. did not do the current but my old meter reported the diode is working okay. I worked the tractor for about 2 hrs with the lights on and read same reading at the end. I put a HF float charger on it and will keep it on while the tractor not in use and during winter hibernation.
I guessed I manged to come out of it with no permanent electrical damage.
