I need a salt/sand spreader

I have a Kubota L4310 w/ a rear grader blade to plow snow. Also have a 1/2 Chevy pickup w/ reciever.

Do the PTO spreaders offer width control? i.e. I'd like to apply sand only to a 8-10' width.

Alternative is to get a salt / sand spreader for the pickup. But I'd still like to spread fertilizer over the pasture areas. Can they do that?

The distance the material is thrown is determined mostly by the RPM and to a lesser extent by the size of the material being spread. I have my spreader set to throw all left--so I go down the right side of my road at about 1300 RPM and back up--also staying to the right--at the same speed covering my 12 foot road perfectly. Hope I'm clear on that....

I've looked at similar models, the problem is they do salt and not sand. My well is at the bottom of the driveway so I'd rather do sand. It seems like only the more expensive models do sand. I really don't know why that is.

I believe it's because sand can pack, cake up or even freeze. In order to reliably deal with that, it has to be more than your basic grass-seed type spreader.

See if your local quarry/rock dealer handles "manufactured sand." It's used for concrete block and the like and is basically washed 1/4" minus. Because of the assorted particle size it doesn't clump as readily as sand and offers better traction. It will spread with the cone 3PH spreaders as long as they have the stirrer link in the bottom.

heres my 2 cent

i was at an equipment auction monday, hundreds of tractors and equipment there. All of the sand/salt/fertilizer - spreaders were rusty. Some were rusted clear through, while others had brand new paint all around them except for at the base of the cone. Even the plastic ones rusted wherever there was metal. The only one that was there that didn't appear to have rust was a stainless steel one. It had one rusty metal gauge, other than that no rust.

Don't know if it helps or not, but it is what I witnessed first hand a couple of days ago.

I'd buy one at auction this summer if I were you. I throw some rock salt in my fel and feather it out in the problem areas. Then make sure I get all the salt out afterwards. Not as efficient as a spreader I assure you.
