It is reasonable to assume I know any model they carry unless it's a local manufacturer and I would not rate a the ar556 highly.

What's wrong with the ar556?

It's a no frills, no bells and whistles, entry level gun. But does what it's supposed to and reliably.

No it's not a decked to the hilt piston operated, exotic barrel lining, accessories $2500 gun. It's like a Honda or Toyota. Cheap, efficient, reliable

I just believe for that amount of money there are better options and I find it hard to believe that the AR556 would be the recommended gun over all the models the store sells because it had "no complaints"..

The Ruger AR556 is a nice weapon.

LD1,

I was/am considering the AR556. What frills, bells, and/or whistles should I consider before dropping the cash on the counter?

Thank you,
Jeff

Jeff we could argue forever about the merits of direct impingment like the AR556 has and the operating rod models. But there is nothing wrong with the Ruger and a whole lot of things right with it. In my opinion while there are many fine direct impingement Ar's out there, The Ruger as as good as any, and better than many.

Agree. Nothing wrong with a no frills gun. The bells and whistles I speak of, sure they are nice, but not necessary. Things like chrome lined or nitrided barrels, gas piston over a DI, better stocks and grips, dust cover and forward assist, etc.

Like comparing a BMW or Mercedes to a ford or Chevy.

Colt LE6920 is a great weapon too.

The colt LE 6920 is as close to the military M16 you'll get... The military doesn't use a piston operated rifle..I believe it runs around $1200.00

Mine has some of these features chrome moly barrel, gas piston, foward assist, dust cover, and it was $530.00 shipped to ffl $10.00 transfer fee...
I shoot it with a bump fire stock, .. I can shoot 5- 40 round mags.. 1 right after the other ,and it doesn't miss a beat

A lot of it is personal preference. I like several of the MagPul accessories. Reasonably priced, great quality and you can 'spruce' up your weapon with different grips, sights, slings, etc. All stuff you use and will appreciate. Adding a bunch of stuff to make it heavier with gear you rarely use is where many go wrong. When I first started shopping for an AR I got enamored with gas piston versions but decided I wasn't a mercenary or even a regular shooter... and I would get a mil spec version, customize my M&P with grips I liked, and then spend the savings in extra mags and ammo while they are easily obtained.
