As for scrapers, if the doggoned scraper can't pull the blade, the blade is set too deep! Best way is to go really fast with a really shallow cut. Heck, a dozer can't even go fast enough to make things work efficiently. (Are we talking about the same machines?) Your soil may have been very wet or sticky. Ah, but what do I know? I had a dream last night that I was pulling a 4 wheeld trailer. It looked like a big tall rectangular box. It was orange, and in very bad repair. It had a BIG motor at the base of the tongue. Looked to be a 2 cylinder Tecumseh, 20-25 Hp. Behind the front wheels was a big vacuum intake about 5' wide, skimming the plowed ground.
Heh... plow it, and vacuum it up in one operation. Could work! Then, you have to hire 20 men to empty the trailer with shovels. /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif
Welp, time to go plow, scoop, and haul! Man, it's hot, but I gotta do it while the weather is dry!

Make that "pump". Now I have to drag my pump and all that hose back there, and risk a hernia. I gotta pump and pump and pump, then haul the pump and hose back to the barn. If mother Nature wasn't so cool, I think I would hate her. /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Maybe it looked like the attached picture. If I recall correctly,... and it was a long time ago, ...and things do change, the word was FAST was BAD, Fast broke things like the machine you were operating. That made your boss mad. YOU DID NOT MAKE YOUR BOSS MAD!

Looks like a 260 AC scraper. I forgot the smaller model AC scraper's nubers but they were good machines. Dad is 60 and says when he first started on a 260 when he was 16 they were old then. No brakes, no cab,and had the fancy half steering wheel and a straight shift. But it was still nicer than the notorius S7 Euclid that always like to back flip the cab in a turn leaving the cut.
Im moving a hill at work for a parking lot about 10 000 cubic yards worth 10 yards at a time with a Deere Paddle wheel scraper. I know about the breaking stuff I puked a motor Thursday. We knew this machine had a bad motor but good transmission and was gonna swap the transmissions with our other machine later but decided to run it now I took my old engine and gonna try to have it back together by dinner monday. Theres nothing like rebuilding a machine on the side of the site lol.

That AC scraper was really a great machine. With the full hydraulics you could be very exact in the cuts and fills you did. I was lucky. I had the only AC unit in the fleet. All the others were electric-cable operated LeTourneau-Westinghouse units. We did not have much trouble with hitting rocks too hard but the L-W guys had a problem of their own. They were supposed to check the cables every night after work so the repair guys could replace them if needed. However, after a hot day in the sun, they were more interested in going home and having a cold one. When those cables broke with a full load at 20MPH on the haul road you came to an immediate stop. That was something to see. No seat belts you understand. Those guys ended up on the hood, against the dash, or worse.
The baddest day I had was after loading a scraper full of rather wet clay, /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gifI got to unload it ....by hand. /forums/images/graemlins/mad.gifIt turned into one big clump that would not come out the front. /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif

The Letourneau Pans/ Tournapulls some that had the full electric steering toggles were a nightmare dad says. I have a friend that used to operate one of 12 the Worsham Brothers owned and one afternoon they were moving across the town they wre working in and it came a down pour and all of a sudden one of the pans in the middle of the train decided to short out and go through a parking lot. He said before it was shut down the operator tried to drop the bowl but on the pavement it just slid it tore the awning off that building. I havent been blessed with running a Cat Pan but Ive run a few Wabco's, a Michign, Terex, And the 762 Deere at work.
