Step one would be visit the JD store and tell them what you want to do with the tractor. Ask what they have used, and what they will work on if something serious breaks on another brand tractor. See what routine work needs to be done on anything you buy, and how much of it you can do yourself. Ask about what electronics the tractor has that could fail and leave you hanging.
If you're going to be running around in the woods with the thing, check the belly side of the tractor for soft parts that could get torn up and leave you stranded far from help -- hoses, wiring, fuel lines, etc.
