Have you looked at the rental returns that Clark Tractor & Suppy in Comanche has for sale? They have a number of 5000 series for sale that are close to your budget or just over it.

I just bought a Farmtrac 360 DTC / fel 39hp. 4wd. quick tatch loader w/ skidsteer bucket. 12 speed shuttle shift, 2 rear outlets Made by LG in korea w/ 4 cylinder mitsubishi diesel enginge. After rebate and 4 years of paying on it, it will cost me 16,100. If you have a reputable dealer in your area check them out..They also make the old ford line. They seem to have a pretty good rep and they are alot cheaper than orange or green.

I quickly looked at a lot of tractors on their website. I didnt see any of the John Deere 4000's really or the 990. I will have to go back and look at the 5000's.

Loaders made for material movement not really made for digging: got it

Trailer is on the list of things to buy: not made for hauling rocks long distances, got it

Time not as much as an issue as money for the tractor: Want reliability and value more than anything though

Thanks for information

I suggest you not limit yourself to the 4xxx series or the 990. The Clark site had some nice utility tractors. There was a 1988 2555 Deere with a loader and an asking price of $18000. That might be worth a look. It would be overkill for the 2 acrea food plots, but when you look at all your chores, it might not be a bad choice.
A walk around the Dealer's lot might have educational value for you, TexasOaks. You can get an idea of what you want and what would fit your needs

BTW, there's a good thread on tractor overturn hazards in the Safety forum. As a potential tractor owner/operator/victim, you might find this thread of interest.
Also...you've 200 acres and are working what...less then 10 acres? What do you plan on doing with the rest of that acreage (rifle range!!!)

Welcome to the board TexasOaks! Hopefully these guys can steer you in the right direction.

If there is only one dealership and you don't have a trailer then I would say you are pretty much locked into green paint. If you are planning on buying a trailer then that opens it up a bit.

Have you actually gone and tried out any tractors yet? That can be a very important part of the equation, especially if you are extra large or extra small. Some tractors just fit different people better than others.

I really think on a property that size you will be happier with a 45 - 50 hp tractor. These modern tractors really are reliable and anything under 500 hours should be good for MANY years to come. Tractors hold their value really well though so it is hard to find a good deal on a used one sometimes, especially if you factor in the 0% interest that many of the manufacturers provide on the brand new models.

As far as bang for the buck, Kubota's L4400 (44 hp) seem to be pretty good. You can get them for around $18,000 brand new with a loader. They are manual shifters and have a pretty solid reputation. I haven't seen a used one for sale though.

I've told you before I got my 1996 Kubota L4200 (45 hp) for $12,000 last year with just under 1,000 hours on it. So far it has been trouble free and I'm really happy with it.

I would for sure check out your local John Deere dealer though and see what they can do for you.

Good luck!

I am a noobie on this board but to me, even though you have 200 acres, you only want to plow 2 acres, you don't want to mow much of it either, you have light brush work and road maintenance. I think 40-50 HP is nice but on your budget and for what you want to accomplish AND since it's your 1st tractor, I think you are thinking too big.

Seems to me something in the 30-40 HP range would do just as good for you since in reality, you are really only caring for what, about 10 of those acres?

A Kubota L series or even maybe a B7800 or or B3030 might be all you really need.

You should be able to find many used tractors in the 30-40 HP range within your budget. Avoid the Chinese tractors at all costs.

Try eBay, do advanced search and search for machines within a 50-100 miles radius of your home so that you can go see before you buy.
Often times you get implements with some of these eBay tractors, just be careful and only buy from people with good ratings.

Good luck and welcome to TBN.
