I have a couple of friends in dairy & they regularly have 55 & 15 gal poly barrels they are more than glad to have someone take off their hands. I've found many uses for them; I've split them @ the vertical seam (easy w/a circular saw) & used the 55's for horse feeders & outdoor equipment/motor covers. The 15's w/the tops cut off work great for storing misc metal & wood cutoffs around the shop & make perfect heavy duty trash cans.

My drum cost me $5, but I had to clean the remainder of the oil out of it. Got it from a petroleum distributor, and it didn't have a scratch or dent in it - was like brand new. He said they sell them like crazy. I have also learned, through TBN, that not all plastic drums are created equal. Know what kind of plastic they are made of.

I have mine on a rolling cart in my garage, which gets transferred to the station via a pallet and my truck. They discount fuel when you get more than 40 gallons.

If you have it outside, some people suggest venting it, covering it, having it up in the air for fuel transfering, and other such things. Read the threads and pick your best option.

You can also buy drums on Ebay.

Since the picture was made for a different purpose, I was a little far off, but you can see my blue 55 gallon barrel on a small pallet right by the overhead door in my shop. When I needed diesel, I just set pallet and barrel into the pickup with forks on the front of the loader bucket. The second picture has a little (not much) better picture of the same kind of barrel, except I had cut the end out of that one to use for a feed barrel for my goat or rabbit feed (I had two of them for that purpose since they were free).

Incidentally, the FEL was off the tractor when the pictures were made, and the forks were off the bucket, but you can see them just to the left of the barrel in the second picture.

I made a fuel caddy out of a 35G grease keg, and a hand dolley. Strappe dthe ket to the dolley after pressure washing it and painting it yellow. Even put the diesel plaquard on it. Cleane dout thge inside darn good with mineral spirits.. Added a rotary hand pump and adapter tot he big bung. Works great to wheel around and fill up a tractor. Can load it int he truck or trailer when empty and take to the filling station. ( unload with laoder after that! )

Thanks for the advice! I ended up with a stainless steel 55 gallon drum, a Tuthill 12 volt, 15gph pump, auto nozzle, and cartridge filter from ebay (great price for the package new) and a heavy pallet. I rinse today and let dry for builing and filling next week end. This barrel was used for citric juice. I ended buying several barrels from the guy, two very clean clamp tops (they look new) and two 30 gallon plastic with handles for oil recycling. He even had clean 5 gallon plastic with lids.

If you're in Atlanta and need stainless steel barrels, give a PM and I'll give you directions to Jimmy, the barrel guy.

As long as it is not galvanized.

My idea is to split them end to end and use the haves for lining ditches.
The 55s for the wider ditches and the 30s &15s for the narrower ditches.
Think this would work?

One thing to consider is that plastic barrels will melt, and a fire will release all of the diesel into the fire. 55 gallons of diesel will do in most structures. A vented steel drum will maintain fluid integrity in most fires.
