Hi gang, my 1979 jd2240 tractor has combustion gas entering cooling system. I think i will get a newer 4wd tractor with a cab and fel to replace it. The tractor will be a general purpose farm tractor which does a bit of everything on a farm that makes little real money. I like the kubota M7040 with a shuttle but all require buying out of state and hiring a transporter. If you were me what tractors in the 70-80 engine hp range would you suggest. my budget is about $34000. Also. should I be afraid of doing business perhaps bringing a tractor 2000 miles away.

Elma is thirty miles from Olympia and several other Puget Sound cities. There are likely John Deere dealers in at least four cities plus Kubota dealers.

Why do you feel pressure to buy out of Washington state, with the uncertainty that entails?

Jeff, there are only 2 M7040 tractors available in my entire state and they are too pricy. Most available are out of state. My main query to the forum is, what are some suggestions as to what 4wd tractors in the 70-80 engine hp are well thought of.

Why the 7040? Are you set on pre tier IV?

Pretty much anything from JD with an "R" or "M" should be fine. Avoid the "E" line.

thanks, the m7040 is right hp and old enough to fit my budget. I am hesitant to step up to tier 4. seems like more hassle for no gain.

There are 5 M7040's showing up on Fastline.com within 200 miles of Olympia WA. Be patient and keep looking. Something you'll like will turn up. Also agree that the higher end Deere utilities could be a good fit.

That a big 10-4. Speaking from experience i have gotten into big of hurry or let some salesman talk me into something I later regretted.

Tier IV emission controls are unquestionably more complex than pre-Tier IV emission controls but they are not valueless. Tier IV tractors have a horsepower increase averaging about 10% from predecessor models and the exhaust is odor, soot and smoke free. These are gains. Each will evaluate these gains according to their individual circumstances.

(I disliked the exhaust soot that accumulated on the FEL of my Tier III Kubota B3300SU tractor-loader.)
