I Put A Little To Much Oil In

So if we have dealer saying one thing, mechanic doing another, book agreeing with one, both, or neither....and then there is are the marks on the dipstick. Which one to believe? I've never known the dipstick marks to be wrong on any engine - but how would I know?

Exactly, how would anyone know, the only way I know is that my L3400 will smoke thought the exhaust when I put in 6 qts. Maybe the dipstick making people didn't tell the manual making people what dot stands for on the dipstick, and that happens when management doesn't buy coffee and donuts. So for anyone who changes their own oil, I'd go with the dot, dash hash slash or line that's on a dipstick.

If it was me I would start it, let the oil flow for 5 minutes or so, then shut it down and wait a half hour for the oil to drain back down then recheck it with the dipstick.

Were you pulling the drain bolts on BOTH sides of the drain pan.

Only pulling one would probably leave ~2 qts in there.

Also, did you pull the dipstick or oil fill cap. Cause the engine is sealed up tight, and the oil only flows a little out then slows down and appears there is no more in there (vacuum).
I always take both plugs out, wait 5 min. or 5 hrs., 6qts still goes beyond the dot, and your right about the draining the oil, comes out fast then almost stops, I have to take the filler cap off so the oil will drain.
But after this oil change, the 7th one I think, I'm gonna start a new procedure when changing oil, I have to change the washers on the drain plugs, I tighten the plugs harder then I ever did to stop the oil from seeping by, don't like torquing drain plugs that much on aluminum threads, anyone else change those washers on the drain plugs.

I've always used a rose gun to remove excess oil or oil from a non-drain plug situation.

When changing oil, I always put one quart less then the manual calls for....let the tractor set for 15 minutes or so, then check the dipstick. If still low, I'll ad another half quart, let it set for another 15 minutes and recheck.
I believe I wrote in a previous post that I don't top it off...normally about midway between the MAX and MIN marks.

I know mine only took 6.25 quarts to bring it to full instead of the 7.1 the book called for, go figure?
did you drain both sumps?

If not that is probably your discrepancy

FYI On the Grand L tractors (maybe others too) the oil pan fits around the front drive shaft. It holds oil on both sides and has two drains. Both drains need to be removed when draining the oil to remove all of the old oil. I don't think I would replace the drain bolts with a brass valve out of fear that a log or something could break the valve off.

Crazyal,
I hear ya, I'm always worried about that too, but touch wood I've been lucky thus far. Did you get your machine from Union Farm Eq?
