Distance and convenience are what has me using the on-road diesel. For just under 100 hours a year of use, I don't think the savings would outweigh the convenience. I have just one 5 gallon diesel can and only fill up once or twice a month. I bring the gas can along and fill it at the same bank of pumps.

Fact is, the place I get the off road at has a high turn over, as they fuel up school buses with the off road (don't ask me why). I know they do because I have seen them do it more than once and it surprised me no end...maybe this is done everywhere, for all I know.
Most school bus companies here in New Hampshire use off-road fuel too. They are exempt from the taxes which is why they are permitted to use off-road fuel on the road.

Farm Diesel is just over .60 cents a gallon cheaper than on the road diesel in my area. I buy 200 gallons at a time and usually use it in a week. Sometimes more, and other times it's sat for months. I have a filter on my tank before my fuel gets to my tractors and I have to change it about every 2,000 gallons. It's not the diesel, but my tanks get dirt in them. Fuel that sits for awhile will get dirt in them.

The only thing I've seen that's worse is 5 gallon containers. If I put some gasoline in them and don't use it right away, it will become dirty just sitting under my covered storage area beside my workshop. I don't have a filter for the five gallon containers, so I try to use it as fast as I can.

From what I've been told, the farm diesel and on road diesel is the exact same product except for the red die. This comes from several fuel stations, tanker drivers and a few diesel mechanics that specialize in tanker repair.

Speaking of off road diesel, how much is is right now in your area??

I need to fill my tank and I just called my local Co-Op who delivers to me and they are at $2.15 delivered. With the way prices have fallen lately, that still sounds high to me. I still have about 70 gallons or so in my tank, so I don't have to buy today, but I'll need to fill the tank soon. Prices? Please...

Off-road delivered in bulk to the farm is $2.29 as of last tuesday. I used to have a 375 gallon bulk tank filled as needed. Since I've "semi-retired" (whatever that is. So far, it only means there's less income with same amount of work) I use quite a bit less fuel. Summer months, maybe 45 to 50 gallons a month at the max. There's a BP station just 1/4 mile from the house. Owner runs a big lawn service also. He's got an off-road pump at his station. There's a fairly high turnover. Fuel is always fresh. I like driving the tractor in to town for some odd reason. Whenever I need fuel, I just run up the road. His fuel is $2.37/9 as of this morning. (The $2.37/9 is for GATORBOY!!!!!!!!) ($2.37 9/10ths for the rest of you.) For $.08 a gallon, I don't have to write a check when the fuel guy comes by the house anymore.

I've also noticed that on-road fuel seems to be better quality.
some places off road diesel is still high sulfur, at least it was earlier this year here. I think it depends on whether your diesel is trucked from the refinery or piped into a distribution point. Here some brands are trucked from the refinery. If piped in I think the only difference is the dye.

There is only two stations that sell off road diesel in my area, the one closest is 6 miles away, They sell a lot off off road diesel, last time I was there to get my two 5 gallon cans filled, I had to wait in line one guy in front of me got 150 gallons, I got 10, the guy behind me got 25. No body got any on road diesel. It cost me 2.19 a gallon, on road diesel was 2.69. I always use a Mr. funnel when I use cans. I do buy on road diesel when the station selling off road is closed (they close at 5pm and are closed Sundays). I will buy the off road for the 40 cent a gallon saving.

While it may be several years before the savings on the tax equals the cost of my bulk tank, I would buy it again in a heartbeat. Like Dargo, I like just pulling up to the tank and filling my tractors. I never worry about whether my Jerry cans are full or not and I don't have to clean up the inevitable spills from can filling. The local coop will bring me 150 gallons on request. They'll deliver just 100 if I will wait until they're in the neighborhood. I am burning $1.80 fuel and have been since March. This thread has reminded me that I need to go out and bang on the tank and see how much is left.

I think when I started this thread i was more p oed about having to pay sales tax at the register on my offroad purchase. The government has gotta have fingers in everything.DO ALL STATES DO THIS? If i used more than what i do i certainly would have my own tank. But i cant justify purchasing one for as much as i use .The oil companys will not fill a 55 gallon barrel up here.A required new setup would be a 275 [OR LARGER] barrel,a solid pad, vent pipe and all the bells and whistles even the pump. Just say you spent 600 on the legal setup, how many gallons would you have to buy to break even?Yes you would be crazy for lugging it in 5 gallon cans if you consumed alot. Now it wouldnt be practical for myself to purchase that saving 25 dollars a year.If i was someone, like DARGO who had several tractors yes id do it.
SO back to the station[the only one i know of for miles with offroad] i cant see where they are selling much so a tank for them id bet sits for well over a year if not more.Im not saying anything is wrong with it,but when its advertised for 25 cents cheaper ,but you still gotta pay sales tax,ill opt for the fresher fuel.I guess its just my preference, similar to filling up with regular, midgrade,or super.
I SUPPOSE i could get a tax number ,and claim it on my taxs, even though i never have enough deductions to file .

I paid 2.199 on 9/22. The pump has two nozzles. One is marked Off Road Diesel the other nozzle is marked Heating oil. Same tank underneath. When I get fuel now they ask what it is being used for. First time I told them the tractor and they wanted tax info. The woman behind the counter told me to say home heating fuel next time to avoid any problems. Now each time I tell them home heating fuel. I work right up the street from the station. Being that it is a truckstop, I would imagine the fuel is being moved very quickly there. Never any fuel related problems.
