No choice here - either have delivered 100+ gallons of "off-road" or fill my 5-gallon cans at the pump with "on-road."

For me, the term hobby farm fits well and the tractor is part of it. The extra taxes/fees incurred are cheaper than installing a tank behind the barn.
1*I can have my 30 gal drum topped off when the supplier is in my area.
2*Take my cans/ drum to them to fill.
3*Take my drum/cans to the gas stations and pay 40 or 50 cents more per gallon for the same stuff i'm getting from my supplier.

Actually for Ohio (including federal taxes) it's at least 52.4 cents per gallon for diesel and 46.4 cents per gallon for gasoline as of 7/1/2006.

State by State Fuel Taxes

So called OFF ROAD fuel is one of the biggest rips and a super money maker for your oil man. Here in MO the highway tax adds up to .41 a gallon. But the discount you receive runs from .17 to .20 a gallon. So---that's quite a nice little extra for our oil sellers. Until a few yrs ago we just bought diesel and filed for the entire .41 back. But people abused and now you pay the oil man. MFA oil does not discuss this matter.

Hmmmm ...... here in Ohio the discount is around 50¢ per gallon ..... but you do have to pay Ohio Sales Tax (5.75 % in my county) .... so you don't save the full 50¢ (unless you are sales tax-exempt) .... but it is still far better than paying for on-road diesel.

In SC you just pump what you want and pay for it. No questions asked. The price difference is not huge, but I haven't compared lately. For me the price is not significantly different enough to make a special trip just to get off-road. Fortunately there is a reliable source of off-road on the way from my house to my property. It has high turnover and I just fill up my cans and throw them in the back of my truck.

I think it is a little silly to criticize someone for not getting 'home' delivery. As Mad pointed out so sharply in another post, the price, policies and schedules of fuel suppliers are different from location to location. For those of us with low consumption the price and hassle might not be worth it. I'm currently looking into it now and it doesn't look like it is going to be worth it. It looks like it will be easier to take drums to him, have them filled and then carry them back to my place.

Also, I think the issue of bad off-road fuel is valid. I have been warned by a number of locals of several places to avoid. Mostly local crossroad filling stations with old, nasty looking tanks and low turnover. The fuel they get new might be as good as anything else but once its been in their tanks it isn't. So it seems wise to be careful who you buy fuel from regardless of what type it is, which is just common sense of course.

Now, here is a question. If I get some drums for diesel I will likely move them using a barrel strap. Can you move loaded plastic drums this way, or just the steel ones?

That's a real good question. I simply roll my 33 gallon plastic drum upright on the bottom edge off the trailer and onto a hand truck. The hand truck works best for me since I already had one.

I would hate to find out from experience that the strap compresses the plastic enough to pop the lid off! I would be unloading from a pick-up bed without a ramp. I do have a little, old low trailer and a hand truck, so if I end up with a plastic drum that might be the best bet.

Exactly. Each situation may be totally different..even though they may be clumped together in various groupings. For me the 5 gallon cans is what Im staying with ( for proably a long time) because of low usage. I had to drag them into town this morning and refill them...but then I took them in the Jeep because I had to get it filled up also!! The "PITA" was "point ZERO".

Maybe next year I MAY go the "fill the barrel" routine..? Ive already got it and a hand pump....all depends on the usage basically
