I had a look at our local Kioti/LS dealer on Saturday and tried out the LS XR3037, LSR4047, LS XU5065 and the Kioti DK45SE.

I was surprised at the price of them as, unless I am getting something very wrong, the price of each was very near the price of the equivalent Kubota. The price of the 3037 was almost identical to the price of the L4400 that I had been looking at.

However, I was amazed at how large the capacities of the FELs of the LS were when compared to the capacities of the FELs of the Kubotas (comparing tractor to tractor, rather than specific FELs as I don't really understand how interchangeable these are).

My local Kubota dealer called this morning to indicate that they have a L4400 with all the implements that I require that has recently been traded with 400 hrs for a third less than the cost of just a base tractor L4400 would be new. From speaking to neighbours, the dealer appears to have a great reputation and so this has lessened my concerned about buying used.

I am very tempted to get this but I am concerned about the fact that I may grow out of it too quickly. All things being as I anticipate, the main issue I believe I will have with being underpowered is the capacity of the FEL. I don't need to be able to life round bales on the FEL at this time but I would hate to purchase something and then find that I wanted to.

How accurate are the brochures when they indicate capacities of FELs and, if, for example, one wished to be able to lift 1500 what capacity of FEL would you look for (1500, 1750, 2000, 2000+)?

If I'm not mistaken, CRA allows for 30% depreciation in the first year and 20% every year after that on the undepreciated value. Depending on how old it is in relation to the number of hours on it, you can get some sort of value. Sounds reasonable to me.

The great thing about a good, used tractor is that someone else has taken the largest hit on depreciation and if you decide it's not big enough for you, your loss, if any, on a trade will be much less because of it.

Unless you specified all of the additional features you wanted on a new L4400, you'd be comparing a stripped model to the loaded Kioti or LS. For example, with the LS you'd get dual rear remotes, SSQA for the FEL, adjustable 3pt lift arms and stabilizers, etc, etc, where all those things are options on the L4400.

Further, I'm not sure where anybody would even get a new L4400 as that model went away a few years ago. I priced out a new L4600 set up the way you'd get either of the LS or Kioti models, and it came out to $32,500. The typical figure is to take 10% off that, so you're looking at $29K, give or take. The Kioti, or LS would be at least $5K less, and maybe as much as $7K.

That explains why I can't find the L4400 on the website of Kubota!

I have to admit that I liked the LSs I guess I just thought that I would be getting them for considerably less than the Kubota would cost and I noted all the additions that came with those.

My main concern is that it was my wife that viewed the tractors at JD and Kubota and, while she is adamant that the price she obtained included all the extras that would make the comparisons valid, I will be heading to the dealers next weekend to see if that was indeed the case. Hopefully, it will only be the addition of the cabs that will separate them. If that is not the case, then I can see how those Kioti/LS will start to look much better.

The LSXR3037 was $28,500 and the LS XU5065 was $40,000. These are Canadian $

As has been mentioned don't forget to check out Massey Ferguson. Like you I have a small acreage, some horses, a four stall barn with hay storage etc etc.

Last year Massey Ferguson had an Equine Rebate program, % of the rebate depended on the HP of tractor seleceted. Savings were significant, I would ask the MF dealer near you if the program is still running.

I just purchased the 1660 cab late last fall after better than a year of trying tractors, all makes mentioned here are quality products so a lot boils down to price, warranty and HOW IT FEELS when you use it. Most dealers have a mound you can play with to use the loader, check cycle times, balance of the tractor etc. Get out there and play with them all, seriously, it's a must do!

Take it from someone who plowed snow the first 15 years on an open station 135, buy a cab if it's in the budget. I wouldn't sacrifice HP or capability to get one but I would strongly recommend considering it. That said, on the clear cold nights with no wind that I need to do a little tractoring, whether moving manure or plow snow, I still love to hop on the 135 and get it done!

This can be a really difficult spec to find the realistic numbers on. It depends where the manufacturer specs the lift capacity, sometimes they say it will lift x amount from the pivot pins, and sometimes it's from bucket center, or even 800mm forward of the pivot pins.

Do you need to consistently handle 1,500lbs in the bucket? Or were you asking more as an example?

FYI, my tractor is rated at 2,300lb lift capacity at the pivot pin, but only 1850 at bucket center. Also, this is to full height, so if you only need to lift a 1,500lb pallet off a flatbed trailer and put it in a barn for instance, you don't need the full height rated lift capacity.

I would think that in Alberta you may want a cab for winter snow removal but they add about $5000 to the price of a tractor maybe much more in Canadian dollars. I have both LS and Kubota and both are fine tractors, but LS does seem to put a lot of extras that make operation nice on their tractor as standard features whereas most other brands charge a premium for them. Telescopic lift arms, dual rear hydraulic remotes, telescopic stabilizers are just a few of the "required" options for smooth tractor operation that come standard on the LS.

I was asking as an example. I have noted that specifications can be at different points but I have also noted that, generally, they all seem to give capacity at the pivot pin, even if they then go on to provide capacity at a different location too.

I noted that the LS contains lots of useful items as standard.

As I said above, I will scope out Kubota this coming weekend to see what specifications will cost what amount. If they come up similar, my feeling is to go with Kubota. If there is a big difference, then I will likely go with one of the LSs.

May I ask what a Kioti DK45se HST goes for up there? It would have been 23,800 delivered for me. That includes the FEL and tax. But Kioti is located near here, and the dealer would have basically driven over to pick one up on an order. It would have to cost more to ship one to Canada. Just curious what the price hike is.
