I think it's time to look for a harness.

A rock climber might want to arrest in front so the head spaps back and not into the rock face? Do not know why else. I would want the D ring up high if that were the case.

On the other hand, I never understood rock climbers. I had a friend die when the rock face he rapelled from sheared off moments after he got to the ground. The section of rock came down on top of him. Pounding anchors into rock cracks and then dropping your weight from it to below it? Crazy people.

I was working in a utility bucket truck this week. That stupid safety line did nothing but endanger my safety getting tangled up, getting in and out of the bucket. No thanks.

Funny...I worked for decades in bucket trucks using safety lanyards and fall arrest harnesses and never had a problem getting in or out of a bucket while wearing them.

My employer in the last year has put fall restraint and fall arrest on their top priority. They've installed cables and tie-off points on their properties, given us all harnesses, lanyards, tethers, training, etc... I have to go on rooftops several times per year to inspect HVAC and air handling equipment, general roof conditions, clean scuppers, gutters, etc... and I really like wearing the harness and equipment. The traveler on the cables just follow you along and you hardly notice them as you go about your business. The only time you really notice it is if you move too fast and it catches like a seat belt would do in a quick stop on a downhill. Then just like the seat belt, you just back up a bit, it releases, and forward you go.

It only takes a couple minutes additional to inspect the equipment, put it on, test it out, and off you go.

One of the often overlooked things with fall arrest gear you need to have a plan on how lower the dangling person down to the ground. if you are working on your own you might be better off hitting the ground than dangling 20min then dieing If you have a helper it is not as easy as you might think to take the weight enough to release the hook to lower somebody down to the ground. You want to make sure your watcher is young fit and trained

If you’re working on a roof and your harness doesn’t keep you on the roof you’ve already screwed up. When I’m working on a roof with a harness the only time I let the rope long enough to fall off is when I’m getting on the ladder.

Rock climbers always attach to the front of their harness. For everything including fall arrest. When I was rock climbing for fun and tree climbing for the forest service we didn't have chest harnesses, only waist. The chest or back harness would be better for fall arrest since it'll keep you upright and support your back and upper body.

I think that using back vs front tie off would depend on the rope position and where the forces will be if you fall. Would you fall back first or face first? Also with the rope in back its out of your way, but you can't manage it (move it around obstacles or adjust a retention device to limit your fall).

I have a young friend who's a good rock climber (he just did El Capitan) and has been working for a company painting high structures that require climbing. Next time he's in town from a job I'll ask what kind of harness he uses for that work.

Rock climbing should have the ropes set with less slack, so there is less force for rope to absorb.fall arrest is always hooked to the back, but some work can get osha waiver to be done in rock climbing gear. For example bridge construction I used fall protection, but bridge inspection was completed above deck in rock climbing gear
