I thought my wife was windy- wind storms in your area?

We had the wind up here last night. We very rarely get tornados, so i guess we are lucky there.
About a year ago we had a strong wind come through and pick up our trampoline [14'] and moved it a couple of hundred feet. That wasn't so bad but our new car slowing it down wasn't so good.

Here south of Canton Ohio My electric went off about 6.5 pm at the start of the storm and came back on about 7.0 pm.
Went back off about about 10.00pm.
Went to bed about 10.5 and the power came back on about 11.00 pm and has been on ever since.
Didn't get any sleep last night as each time I was about to doze off a big gust of wind would hit and wake me up this went on all nite till about 8.00am this morning.
It was a long restless tiring nite.
No damage though.
My wifes step mother called last nite and said her elect went off about 8.00pm last nite.
She called again about 8.5am this morning and is still with out elect.
Says the power co. told her she may be out till midnite tomorrow nite.

We live in a holler- for you uppity types, that's a valley. We've had some wind storms before but MAN.......usually the wind sounds like two freight trains running the ridges(about 200ft above our house). But, tonight, when that weather front came through, I really thought it was a tornado coming. The hair stood up on the back of my neck, I was getting ready to grab the kids to go to the basement and then, as quickly as it came, it calmed down- almost to an eerie way. Now the gusts are picking back up and it is very strong.

Some power is off in the region and there are quite a few trees down.

The front hit us last night about 10:00pm. VERY windy. I thought I heard a tree fall but I did not see one this morning but we do have lots of trees so I might have missed it. We had a dead tree fall a few weeks back in a much less severe wind storm. Last night was pretty windy. Once the front passed it was all quiet. Kinda freaky how that happens.

Tornadoes scare me because there ain't squat we can do. Its either going to hit or miss. We can run and hide in the bathroom but if its a big twister..... We live a mile from the highway. With the big storms a mile wide that puts it all in perspective.

When we built the house I really wanted to put in a storm room. Did the research, talked to the builder, etc but there was not place in the house for the storm room unless we drastically changed the plans. One day when we have the cash to build the garage we will have a storm room. It will be use for canned garden storage most of the time but it will give us a place to go if a twister visits. The idea of knowing a storm is on the way and I can't do anything but hide in a bathroom does not make me happy.

Gale warning is in effect at the moment but I don't think we will get the kind of winds you guys are talking about. The front has either weakened or is focussed somewhere else.

Some people do have storm cellars, but it's a very very small minority. I suppose you saw in the news about the tornado in Lone Grove, OK, which killed at least 8 people. That's the area in which I grew up, and we had cellars. I used to hate being awakened at night and having to go to the cellar. I was actually glad when we moved to a home with no cellar.

I know a stick built home wont always hold up to a twister but most have foundations/basements that provide at least a chance at survival, those mobile which seem to be tornado magnets, just disintegrate.
They interviewed one guy and he said they heard the alarm got up and ran into a storm culvert under the street nearby with his family, after the freight train passed they came out to dead silence and total darkness. Not a trace of their mobile home, he said the whole thing took only 20 minutes from the time of the alarm to standing there homeless

There should be some kind of emergency shelter that can be made cheaply out of steel and be anchored to the ground, just for the folks who don't have a cellar or a culvert.

high wind warning expires here in 20 more minutes, but it is still blowin hard.
When the gusts come, it sounds like a train, it shakes the house good. Fortunately our
power has stayed on so far.

it sure got windy the other night, we lost some shingles here in Mansfield Ohio, I'm afraid to go see what happened at the farm... Lots of trees down there already the farm is out on top of probably near highest point in ashland county.

Bad thing about tornadoes the big ones you can't hide from, they rip up concrete foundations and asphalt off the roads as well as grass/sod! I've been through 3 or 4 already, non really close but seen one with in a mile and that is too close!.
