I was in Scotland playing golf with my 2 brothers and dad. We were at a course called Troon...they call it Royal Troon but I don't believe in royal anything so, i call it troon.
3 things....last one about gary player....
1. i had a duke hat on and i hear from the other side of the practice area, "I travel 3000 miles and still can't get away from dookies". 4 Drs. from UNC we're there on some boondoggle medical conference, i guess they managed to fit in 18 holes.
2. We had been there a few days and got friendly with the guy who gets things going, he's called the starter. there was another player standing there waiting, American. This guy had to have $1500 worth of golf cloths on. Hat, tartan sweater, knickers.....he//, i bet his socks cost $100!
The starter calls me over and says to me, real quiet......lad, if it wasn't for him, youd be the best dressed golfer here today.
3. The starter said Gary Player was in town filming a tv show for japanese tv. Gary and crew Would be going out very early the next morning to film and i was invited. My brother and i went at 6am. There were 20 japanese people and their tv gear and Gary Player all on the 1st tee. Some kid comes running up with a brand new pair of shoes...probably $250. Gary had forgot his. The starter later told me Player is notorious for forgetting things....freebee. Got to the 4th or 5th hole. Gary Players ball is in a sand trap. Famous trap, its the trap Where Bobby Clampet lost his game. The japanese tv announcer says....Gary Player, greatest bunker player in the world, just watch his style .......or something......Gary takes his shot and proceeded to chunk it...dubbed it...hit it fat...did not move the ball 2 feet, basically a lousy shot.
You could hear a pin drop. Hes a small person, tuff as nails!
Great story. Never met the guy but watched him when the PGA was in St. Louis quite a few years back.
If you love golf, Scotland is the place!
