I used HOW much water?

Ouch . . . if you're right about 3000 gallons a month for a family of 3 or 4, the 2 of us are really using too much. I just looked at my bills and:

January - 4329
February - 4837
March - 4350
April - 4829
May - 15295

Yeah, rain was in short supply in May, so I watered the yard a bit.

Other than your watering bill those are about the numbers the wife and i use ourselves. that family of 3-4 must only have 2 taking showers/baths and must be using those water saver toilets and flushing each twice a day max.

I guess living in the Tennessee Vally has spoiled me. Water is plentiful and cheap. It has never crossed my mind to conserve water. I do however use a Purr filter on thr kitchen faucet to remove any hardness and chlorine

I TURNED THE WATER OFF at the city side two months ago...
*I wrote down what it read when I turned it off.
**It will be interesting to see what the meter reads.
* Smart move.
**Turned off it should still read the same leak or no leak.

There's times when I don't love being on a well. The water is pretty hard, and if the power goes out, we're swiftly out of pressure. But I can water my garden alllll day if I want to, for pennies in electricity.

I just read your alligator, snakes etc thread and you said you are back from Miami. What was the final word on the water?

Well, it was somewhat of a Mexican stand-off. The guy I spoke with said I was NOT supposed to turn off the water at the city valve, and I said the City valve was not supposed to still be spinning when the valve was off. It had not been turned back on, but I could see this little triangle still slowly revolving in the meter glass.

I paid the bill and as the department head was not there, got his name and direct number. I'll try to get him on Monday ( think he may be on vacation this week). I also put secondary cut-off valves on all the outside faucets, turned off the valves under the sinks, toilets, water heater, Washer inlets, and pulled the circuit breaker on the water heater. They have gotten their last payment for water as far as I'm concerned until someone else is in that house.

<snip>

.

That would show you have two leaks, one somewhere after the shutoff and then the shurtoff itself leaking.

My Grandparents had the same thing happen at the cabin.

They built in 1960 and bought the 5' long bar wrench from the water district to turn the water off and on seasonally.

In mid 70's... they had trouble with the valve and called the water company... the guy was real upset... he said customers are not allowed to use the district valve and my Grandparents would be billed for the repair...

Sure enough, a bill for several hundred dollars was forthcoming... my Grandfather went to the district with 5' long bar and the receipt from 1960 when he bought it from the district and contested the bill... saying the district sold him the tool to turn off the water... the manager waived the charge.

After that, we installed our own valve about a foot away from the district valve...

1*I paid the bill .
2*I also put secondary cut-off valves on all the outside faucets, turned off the valves under the sinks, toilets, water heater, Washer inlets.
3*I pulled the circuit breaker on the water heater.
4*They have gotten their last payment for water as far as I'm concerned until someone else is in that house.
1*I would not have paid a bill for water running through a turned off shut off valve.
2*This still will not stop the water that's running through the shut off valve that's turned off.
3*Turning off the elect. to the w.h. won't stop a water leak.
4*What are you going to do about the bills they will keep sending you ?

1*The guy I spoke with said I was NOT supposed to turn off the water at the city valve.
1*So what is the valve for it it isn't to shut the water off?
The guy's nuts.

6*After that, we installed our own valve about a foot away from the district valve...

2*The water company had trouble with their valve not your grand parents.
3*He was wrong and lying .
One of the reason the valve is there is so the customer can shut off the water to make repairs and in cases of emergencys.
4*The water compans was trying to fraudlently collect from him what is normal operating expense and the water companies responsibility .
Your grand father had no obligation to prove he had the right use the valve .
That's what they are there for.
5*You mean he waived the fradulant charge.
6*This still does not solve the problem as there are times your lines and theirs have to be completly isolited.
